Pittsburgh Modular’s Lifeforms SV-2 arrives after a decade of research on synthesisPittsburgh Modular Synthesizers has launched Lifeforms SV-2, a new version of its Lifeforms SV-1 synth, following a decade of developmental research.
Lifeforms SV-2 offers new oscillators, waveshapes, overdrives, filter character modes, envelopes, and a new spring reverb. The company describes it as an “instrument that offers the organic warmth and power of vintage analogue alongside the expanded creative potential of modern ideas”.

As for its key features, the oscillator core has been redesigned to include Thru-zero FM and Phase Modulation, allowing the new triangle core oscillator to stay in tune “even under extreme frequency modulation”.
Further expanding its sound palette, a Pulse Symmetry waveform adds a second ‘vertical’ dimension of modulation to pulse waves, and a proprietary Blade Wave creates a sawtooth variant that is said to offer a dense, natural chorus effect.
The synth also hosts the Pittsburgh Filter, a critically acclaimed state-variable, multimode analogue filter. Its architecture ensures that signal amplitude and harmonic warmth remain stable throughout the entire sweep, eliminating dead spots.
Lifeforms SV-2 also introduces a pair of Character modes and customised Overdrive for vintage-inspired grit and harmonic saturation. The Character modes recontextualise legacy signal-processing techniques to dynamically reshape the filtered waveforms, further enhanced by the integrated overdrive circuit.
