This producer has created an electronic album for babies so “parents and their children can bond over a micro rave”Graham Smyth, a DJ and producer from Ireland, has created an electronic music album for babies. Split into two halves for both moving and winding down, it’s intended to help babies and their parents bond over “a micro rave and a nap”.
Fittingly titled Music For Babies To Rave And Sleep To, the record utilises children’s instruments, and its tracks are even inspired by how a young child may pronounce words – with Toy Piano becoming Toy Pianonono, for example. The record was crafted with assistance from producer Gareth Quinn Redmond, and its title also takes inspiration from Brian Eno’s Music For… albums.

Speaking to District Magazine, Smyth explains: “The album is intended to introduce children to the different aspects of electronic music, from building up to the peak time rave all the way down to placing the head down for a snooze so mirroring a night on the tiles is fully intentional.”
Backed by science no less, he continues to share, “Babies’ heart rates are 50 percent faster than adults so the music should reflect this, hence the drum ‘n’ bass inspired beats on [track] Toy Pianonono (For Raving).
“The percussion is even influenced by how young children interact with instruments. If you give an adult a keyboard they will probably try to bang out a hesitant version of Chopsticks, whereas a child might throw it, bang it, rub it, hit it, even eat it. I thought that all the typical sounds (not the eating) that children make when interacting with the instruments should be included in the production.”
Babies certainly have an interesting connection with music; YouTuber Rick Beato shared his belief that all babies can develop perfect pitch up to nine months old on a Rick Rubin’s podcast posted earlier this year.
Beato came up with the theory after watching a TED talk from Patricia Kuhl, a professor known for her research on early language learning. Kuhl showcased a study which looked into the sounds that babies can hear in their early life, and how they are “geniuses” when it comes to detecting language.
Graham Smyth’s Music For Babies To Rave And Sleep To is out now. You can find out more via his Bandcamp page.
