What's so good?
Industrial to start, this song caught me right away. Poetic lyricism poured through an R&B vocal performance, incited further interest. The vocals are stretched thin on the higher notes in a beautifully breathy way. The instrumental thickened during the chorus, which provided balance and intrigue as the song progressed. On top of that, I am weak when it comes to obscure vocal samples — they hook me in and keep me coming back for more. Latir worked in a sample, along with a police siren, and I was totally captured — plain and simple. The very positive association I have with this particular sample from Paolo Nutini's "Iron Sky" lends strength to its grip. The vocal harmonies added a haunting touch that made for a full and complete journey. Speaking on the inspirations and ideas behind E1, Latir writes:“I moved to Bethnal Green in East London (Tower Hamlets/Hackney)in 2020 after growing up in North London, and this song details all the chaos I’ve witnessed on this side of the city. E1 (and E2) being the postcode for the infamous area."
