  • Behringer releases the Centaur Overdrive, inspired by the classic Klon CentaurFor those producers looking to use the classic overdrive sound of the Klon Centaur without breaking the bank, direct your attention to the new Behringer Centaur Overdrive. This is the latest emulation of the historic pedal, and it runs only $69.

As faster, more intense genres like hard techno, drum ‘n’ bass, and dubstep continue to ascend (not to mention the artists who are literally combining metal and electronic music), running this pedal through different outboard synths can give your sounds some authentic heavy flavour.
In a statement on the new piece, Behringer says the Centaur Overdrive will provide “legendary transparent boost overdrive with huge dynamic range.”
First designed by the American engineer Bill Finnegan in 1994, the Klon Centaur has become a staple of classic guitar pedals over the years. Having custom-made every component himself, Finnegan only created roughly 8,000 models throughout 14 years, and they are now being sold for as much as $9,000.

Renowned guitarists including John Mayer, Jeff Beck, Joe Perry, and Ed O’Brien all include the Klon in their arsenal of gear.
But for those who aren’t making as much money playing music as those icons, a $69 clone with “high headroom and high-quality Germanium diodes” can enrich music in a similar manner. “With Centaur Overdrive in the chain, you can dance lightly on the strings for a cleaner tone or really dig in to make your guitar, and amp, roar.”
With the Klon becoming a quintessential piece of gear for a heavy guitar sound, the Centaur Overdrive is far from the only Klon clone that’s on the market. Some that are more pricey include the Wampler Tumnus V2, the MXR Sugar Drive, and the Warm Audio Centavo, the last of which, with its similar design to the original, has been heralded as one of the most accurate clones of the classic Klon.
If Behringer isn’t to your fancy but you’re in the market for a Klon clone, Warm Audio might be your best bet. In our review of the brand’s Centavo pedal, which is also based on the Centaur, we said: “The Centavo is an excellent example of this circuit and stands up admirably against significantly more expensive pedals… Centavo is a great pedal for adding warmth and shaping the tone of a wide variety of instruments and will make a great addition to any studio or pedal collection.”
