No shit at masterchain đ
âWhen you first start, youâre like, âI donât know if I want another artist to see all the shit I have on my master chainââ: Rezz on approaching collaborationsFrom deadmau5 to NGHTMRE to Subtronics, 28-year-old dark bass maestro Rezz is no stranger to collaborations.
However, even she gets âinsecureâ when first starting out, as she reveals in a new interview with MusicTech.READ MORE:Â âWhen someone doesnât have the sauce anymore, they go elsewhere to shockâ: Jack Antonoff criticises Kanye West
âWhen you first start, you think there are things that youâre potentially doing wrong, and youâre insecure about that,â Rezz says. âYouâre like, âOh, I donât know if I want another artist to see all the shit that I have on my master chainâ. But the thing is, when youâve produced music for a long time, you realise that there actually are no rules.â
âSome peopleâs project files are absolutely insane. Some peopleâs mixdowns arenât the best, from a technical standpoint. But it doesnât matter at all. Because the song idea still came across.â
That said, going into sessions with a âblank canvasâ is a big no-no for the producer-DJ, who admits she isnât âcomfortableâ with âgoing into the studio from scratch with someoneâ
Recounting the making of 2021âs Hypnocurrency with her mentor and close friend deadmau5, Rezz explains: âWith Hypnocurrency, I started it by myself in my house then took the trackâs skeleton to Joelâs [deadmau5], then Joel left his touch, finished mixing and mastering it and made it sound tighter. So when I was actually in Joelâs studio, it wasnât like I was going in and turning the billions of knobs on his studio synths.â
The same goes for the musicianâs recent collaboration with Virtual Riot: âI worked in Joelâs studio recently with Virtual Riot. We were working on a song in his studio but, really, all we did was plug our laptop into Joelâs sound system. So once again, itâs not like weâre going in, using Joelâs millions of dollars worth of analogue gear,â says Rezz.
She adds: âI donât want to go into a studio with someone with a blank canvas. That kind of freaks me out. Virtual Riot had sent me an idea, so we already had a direction. And I was like, âOh, thatâs easy, because I already know what Iâm going to do.ââThe post âWhen you first start, youâre like, âI donât know if I want another artist to see all the shit I have on my master chainââ: Rezz on approaching collaborations appeared first on MusicTech.
