  • Attorney Chooses Music Over Law & Invests In Audient ASP4816-SEMusic producer, Thomas Shea favours a ‘scattered workstation approach’ to his home studio. “I like to work in different places. I just like the variety,” he says. With the ASP4816-SE a significant part of his music production arsenal, he acknowledges that his way of doing things “is unusual.”

Not as unusual as his back story, however. Tom originally trained as an attorney and practised law, until one day 16 years ago he had an epiphany! He decided he was going to become a music producer. “Lightning struck me. I closed down my law practice,” he says. He went about finding local musicians, taught himself songwriting, made connections and bought himself some recording gear - he was well and truly hooked!

The Audient brand first came to his attention when looking for a replacement audio interface. His first purchase was the latest iD44. “I liked the quality, the test measurements, the form factor and the metal construction.”  Now he uses that as a headphones amplifier with his ASP4816-SE, and has since picked up an iD4 as well.

Shea shares what he particularly likes about the console. “First, the sound.  I am one of those producers who likes a very clean sound and the ASP4816-SE really delivers on this.  Second, the build and finish quality is excellent.  I am very fussy about things like that.  The quality of the faders and knobs, the beautiful aesthetic redesign and the flawless finish are very satisfying to me.  It is a pleasure each time I see it.“

He continues, “Third is the functionality.  I am constantly pleased with the way the console functions are designed.  The layout and functions make sense and are easy, relative to its many capabilities.  It seems to me other consoles are overly complex and confusing to use.  Not the ASP4816-SE!”

Tom Shea can be found on many global music services. He’s currently working on a new album, with a few songs already in final production stages.

  • Logic Pro and GarageBand users: Cory Wong just launched a sample and loop-loaded Producer Pack – and you can get it for free nowApple has released a Producer Pack in collaboration with Cory Wong for both GarageBand and Logic Pro – and it’s available now for free.
The pack, curated with help from the Vulfpeck guitarist and producer, is available via all iOS versions of both softwares and is coming soon with an update for the Mac versions.

READ MORE: You can now get Apple Music’s Replay feature monthly instead of annually

This new pack contains over 300 loops, three drum kits, and a Live Loops grid which lets users jam with content provided by Wong himself.
“Some of the goals that I had for this pack are really showcasing how I think about rhythm section parts fitting together, and not just the arrangement of those instruments together but how those things can be sections in different songs,” he says.
“If creating music is intimidating to you, I would encourage you to just try putting things together. Just allow yourself to look at it as having fun. If it sounds good to you, then it’s good.”
He adds, “There are so many tools available to you, not just in this producer pack itself, but also just the effects that you can add to the loops that I made.”

“So, whilst we are delighted that RipX DAW is gaining recognition as the best and only AI DAW of its kind, we are excited to announce that soon, with Apple Vision Pro, RipX DAW will also offer a completely new, interactive, compositional experience, giving users much more freedom to view and create music in their chosen surroundings – all utilising our unique, note-based Rip audio format.”

  • Should you care about getting perfect recordings? No – MGMT’s debut album was recorded using a “really bad” interface with signal bleed between channels, and still sold millions of copiesWhile there’s still strong demand for a more imperfect vintage-style sound, these days, the recording industry idealises perfect-quality recordings, free of artefacts like tape hiss and signal bleed.
Naturally, the cleaner the signal, the easier it is to mix among other elements/instruments, but should producers really be that preoccupied with obtaining pristine recordings?

MGMT’s 2007 debut album Oracular Spectacular is evidence that perfect recordings may not be as important as we think, at least from a commercial standpoint. The LP has sold well over a million copies, but its recordings are far from perfect, Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser recall in a new interview with MusicRadar.
They remember recording rough demos for the album with Dave Fridmann using a “really bad” digital interface, and ending up using some of them on the record’s final masters.
“When we were making our first record, we had rough demos recorded on a RadioShack microphone and a really bad digital interface that had signal bleed between the channels,” says Goldwasser.
“We thought, surely Dave’s going to want to redo all of this, but he said, no, there’s a character about it that we’ll never be able to recreate if we try it any other way. That’s stuck with us alongside the same irreverence we had when we very first started the band.”

Imperfection is often the very lifeblood of some of the most well-known and revered tracks. While MGMT’s example above generally refers to low-quality recording equipment, there have been innumerous of actual mistakes making it onto record, and consequently contributing to the life of the songs.
The Police’s Roxanne is one such example; as the story goes, the atonal piano chord and subsequent laugh during the track’s intro was the result of Sting sitting on the piano and finding himself amusing. It added such character it was kept in, and the song is far and away one of the band’s biggest hits regardless.
So by all means strive for the best recordings you can, but don’t be so hasty to delete or write off takes if they’re not conventionally perfect. You might just be onto something.
