BMI's 28th Annual Key West Songwriters FestivalThe 28th annual Key West Songwriters Festival presented by BMI took over the island for five days (5/01-5/05) as music enthusiasts traveled to see over 250 BMI multi-genre creators perform their favorite hits. The Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association and Rams Head Presents provided an array of shows across 50 venues including open-air performances at waterfront resorts to intimate acoustic settings.

BMI songwriters arrived at BNA on Wednesday morning (5/01) where they were greeted at the “Lift Off to the Kickoff” event in Delta’s sky club, as Delta Air Lines is the official airline for the festival. The highly anticipated yearly event commenced with the official “Sunset Pier Kick Off Party” at the Ocean Key Resort & Spa hosted by Storme Warren, where Kristen McNamara, Heartwreckers and headliner Dylan Marlowe took the stage. Afterwards, fans were able to see songwriters like Jacob Hackworth, Jet Harvey, Jackson Nance, Tim Nichols and Shane Profitt at Conch Republic Seafood Company before heavy-hitters like Chuck Cannon, Jack Ingram, Bridgette Tatum, Tommy Sims and Jeffrey Steele took the stage at the Key West Theater. Attendees capped off the night at the Green Parrot for the “HD Radio Late Night Hang” featuring Robert Randolph, Guthrie Trapp and Dylan Altman.

Thursday (5/02), the takeover in the tropics continued at Rams Head Southernmost Bar & Restaurant where hourly rounds featured BMI songwriters such as Renee Blair, Ronnie Bowman, Dax, Jeff Garrison, Preston James and many more. The highly anticipated “Liz Rose & Friends” round returned to Blue Heaven as she treated the packed house to surprise performances by Cameron Bedell, Cassidy Daniels, Seth Ennis, and Joe Fox. Dante’s Key West Pool Bar & Restaurant offered hourly sets including a signature White Claw round featuring Bedell, Alee and Fancy Hagood. Later that night, a sold-out crowd packed in the Coffee Butler Amphitheater for Mackenzie Carpenter, Restless Road and headliner Cole Swindell.

The momentum continued into Friday (5/03) morning as the day kicked off with hourly rounds at the Beachside Resort & Residences Poolside, Hyatt Centric Key West Resort and the Southernmost Resort Pineapple Pool Party featuring songwriters like Ben Chapman, Lori McKenna, Brian McKenna, Chris McKenna, Meg McRee and Brad Rempel. Newcomer La Te Da Cabaret hosted intimate hourly rounds that evening with an array of acts including Laci Kaye Booth, Sheena Brook, Harper Grace and Sonia Leigh.

Saturday (5/04) morning fans were offered the opportunity to attend yoga with songwriter Emma Klein or a Bloody Mary Bash at Key West Theater with Robert Earl Keen. In its first year, the Key West Woman’s Club hosted hourly rounds at the Hellings Curry Museum with Rebecca Lynn Howard, Megan Linville, Twinnie and Emma Zinck. The Texas Heritage Songwriters Association and the Texas Music Office presented the Texas Showcase at the San Carlos Institute hosted by Jack Ingram and Liz Rose who were joined onstage by Aaron Barker, Garrett Bradford, Cassidy Daniels, Paul Jenkins, Morgan Lee Powers, Robynn Shayne, Russell Sutton and Scott Sean White. Fans flocked to Duval Street that night to catch Kaleb Sanders, Lily Rose and Dallas Davidson for the free street show.

Sunday (5/05) launched with the inaugural “Sunday Songs: Music & Mimosas” at Williams Hall where Chuck Cannon, Elisha Hoffman, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Tommy Sims and BMI’s Shannon Sanders performed renowned gospel songs. The night concluded with the “All Star Encore” at the Key West Theater featuring David Fanning, Earl Bud Lee, Danny Myrick, Taylor Phillips, Alana Springsteen, Shawna Thompson and more. Proceeds from the five-day event benefit the BMI Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 1985 that supports music education and creation through various grants and scholarships, along with Michelle’s Foundation, a Key West-based nonprofit that helps children and families in need. Additional beneficiary from the event includes CreatiVets which is a non-profit that teaches the United States Armed Forces veterans to use visual arts and music as a means of addressing their unseen wounds of war. The 28th Annual Key West Songwriters Festival was sponsored by Delta Air Lines, HD Radio, Texas Roadhouse, and White Claw.

Non Contact Scope Probe Costs Nearly Nothing[IMSAI Guy] wants you to build a non-contact scope probe. The cost? Assuming you have a bit of wire and a regular scope probe, it won’t cost you anything. Why do you want such a thing? You can see what he does with it in the video below.
The probe is really just a coil with little slip-over coils that grab it. You can stick it on and remove it just as easily, so you don’t have to sacrifice the probe for normal use. It won’t give you high-accuracy readings, but if you want to sniff around a circuit without directly connecting to it, it will do the trick. If you are too lazy to make a coil, you can even clip a ground lead to the probe tip, although that won’t work quite as well.

There are many variations on this theme that are useful when you don’t want to actually contact what you are probing. For example, a thin insulating cap or coating over the scope probe can allow you to capacitively couple to the circuit under test.
This is a trick we’ve seen before, but — honestly — not lately. It is a great thing to have in your virtual toolbox and if you don’t have a real one and you need it, they take just a second to make. You might even be able to repurpose a ground spring with a little effort.
While these probes will pick up EMI, if that’s what you want to measure, you can do better. What we really want is a free differential probe, but we haven’t found one of those yet.

Metro Boomin invites rappers to jump on beat mocking Drake as Kendrick Lamar feud escalatesMetro Boomin has invited rappers to jump in on the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef with a spicy “BBL Drizzy Beat Giveaway”.
Amid the fiery, rapid exchange of diss tracks between Lamar and Drake in recent weeks, attention shifted Saturday night (May 4) to the 30-year-old producer, who took a fresh shot at the Canadian rapper with a new beat titled BBL Drizzy.

While a winner in Metro’s freestyle competition hasn’t yet emerged, the work of one talented wordsmith has caught the producer’s eye. With bars like “Drake eyebrows ‘bout strong as a bitch/ If he get too surprised shit might cause a glitch” and “They say Drake not allowed at Chuck E. Cheese,” user Depressed Cowboy Fan got a laugh out of Metro himself, who commented, “Lmao bar for bar this gotta be the funniest one.”

Along with the giveaway, Metro also slammed Drake’s alleged “coloniser” behaviour in a flurry of posts calling attention to the mixed-race rapper’s use of the N-word as well as a picture of Drake wearing blackface – an image Pusha T notoriously used in 2018 as the cover art of his bombshell diss track against Drake, ‘The Story of Adidon’.

The producer’s latest taunt follows his March collaboration with Future, the track Like That, on which Lamar featured with blistering bars hitting out at both Drake and J. Cole. It also arrives in response to Drake’s recent diss track, Family Matters, on which the 6 God raps: “I mean it’s true a n**** slimed me for my AP/ Just like how Metro n***** slimed him for his main squeeze/ Out here beggin’ for attention, n****, say please”. On a prior diss, Push Ups, Drake had sneered at the producer’s musicality: “Metro, shut your ho ass up and make some drums”.

Metro is far from the only producer embroiled in Lamar and Drake’s ongoing battle. Last week, Lamar released Euphoria and 6:16 in LA, hitting back at Drake’s disses Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle. The track 6:16 in LA was notably co-produced by longtime Taylor Swift producer Jack Antonoff, which felt to many like a cheeky acknowledgement of Drake’s repeated Taylor Swift references in his tracks.
In Taylor Made Freestyle, for instance, Drake accused Lamar of ignoring his disses due to the release of Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department: “Now we gotta wait a fucking week cause Taylor Swift is your new top/ and if you boutta drop, she gotta approve,” he rapped.
Following the release of Family Matters last Friday, the ongoing Drake-Lamar saga swiftly escalated, taking an ugly turn as both sides took shots at each other’s families. On Saturday, Lamar dropped Meet the Grahams (produced by The Alchemist) and Not Like Us (produced by DJ Mustard), with Drake responding with The Heart Part 6 Sunday night.

But what about those who find their spotlight later in life? In a new interview, Fabiana Palladino discusses being signed as a new artist in her mid-30s and how she navigates an industry that often prefers its talents “young, fresh and cool”.

Speaking to MusicTech in our latest digital cover feature, Palladino recounts how in her early 20s, she met a record label executive who casually remarked that they never sign artists over the age of 25 — a comment that stuck with her up till the release of her eponymous debut album this year.
“It definitely did affect me. It wasn’t directed at me,” says the Paul Institute signee, “but there is just that thing in the industry of [being excited by] young, new artists. How often do you see someone in their 30s, female or male, being a new artist or putting out their first album? It’s just, like, very rare.”
“There’s so much value placed on being young and fresh and cool, and not that much value placed on like experience, maturity or wisdom.”
“It was just always on my mind,” Palladino adds. “And I let it hold me back, for sure. And then, eventually, I just thought, ‘This is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. There’s no reason why a person of any age can’t make something creatively brilliant. I’m not going to let this stop me anymore.’”
According to Fabiana’s father — producer and bassist Pino Palladino, it was a comment that ended up working to the musician’s advantage: “That’s very much her character, too,” he says. “If you tell her she can’t do something that she wants to, she’ll find a way. She’s very determined.”

This Windows Installer Installs LinuxIt may be a very long time since some readers have installed a copy of Windows, but it appears at one point during the installation there’s a step that asks you which OS version you would like to install. Normally this is populated by whichever Windows flavours come on the install medium, but [Naman Sood] has other ideas. How about a Windows installer with Alpine Linux as one of the choices? Sounds good to us.
You can see it in action in the video below the break. Indeed Alpine Linux appears as one of the choices, followed by the normal Windows licence accept screen featuring the GPL instead of any MS text. The rest of the installer talks about installing Windows, but we can forgive it not expecting a Linux install instead.
So, the question we’re all asking is: how is it done? The answer lies in a WIM file, a stock Windows image which the installer unpacks onto your hard drive. The Linux distro needs to be installable onto an NTFS root partition, and to make it installable there’s a trick involving the Windows pre-installation environment.
This is an amusing hack, but the guide admits it’s fragile and perhaps not the most useful. Even so, the sight of Linux in a Windows installer has to be worth it.
