  • Apple unveils Logic Pro For Mac 11 and Logic Pro For iPad 2 – with AI front and centreApple has announced Logic Pro 11, the highly anticipated new version of its popular DAW software, as well as Logic Pro For iPad 2, and this time, artificial intelligence is the name of the game.
The new Logic Pro is loaded with new studio assistant features designed to “augment the music-making process” – while promising users retain “full creative control” – including Session Players, which expands Logic’s Drummer capabilities to include a Bass Player and Keyboard Player; new inbuilt stem separation features Stem Splitter; and ChromaGlow, which “instantly adds warmth to tracks”.

“Logic Pro gives creatives everything they need to write, produce, and mix a great song, and our latest features take that creativity to a whole new level,” says Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple’s senior director of Apps Worldwide Product Marketing. “Logic Pro’s new AI-backed updates, combined with the unparalleled performance of iPad, Mac, and M-series Apple silicon, provide creative pros with the best music creation experience in the industry.”

    Session Players

Building upon Logic’s long-adored Drummer feature, Session Players expands the scope of the DAW’s built-in backing band to include both a Bass Player and Keyboard Player, offering an AI-driven accompaniment which “responds directly to feedback”.
As Apple explains, the AI-powered Bass Player was trained in collaboration with “today’s best bass players” – though it doesn’t specify who they were – using “advanced AI and sampling technologies”.
Users are able to choose between eight different AI Bass Players, and there are controls for both complexity and intensity, depending on the style of music you’re playing. There are also advanced parameters for slides, mutes, dead notes and pickup hits for more in-depth control.
Additionally, Bass Player can jam along with chord progressions, or using the workflow in reverse, users can choose from 100 Bass Player loops to draw inspiration. There are also six new bass software instruments, including both acoustic and electric models, “inspired by the sounds of today’s most popular bass tones and genres”.
Similarly, Keyboard Player is able to accompany chord progressions with both simple block chords and chords with extended harmony, and there’s also the option to adjust its sound via mic position, pedal noise, key noise, release samples and sympathetic resonance.
    Stem Splitter

Perfect for producers and remixers, Stem Splitter brings stem separation to Logic Pro. With “lightning fast” operation driven by AI and M-series Apple Silicon, Stem Splitter separates a raw recording into four elements: Drums, Bass, Vocals and Other Instruments.
    ChromaGlow

Most producers have a tool in their arsenal to add warmth to their tracks, and Apple now hopes they’ll switch to Logic’s built-in ChromaGlow tool.
Modelled on sounds produced by a blend of the world’s most revered studio hardware – and again, using both AI and Apple’s M-series silicon – users can choose from five different saturation styles to add “ultra-realistic warmth, presence and punch”.
    Pricing and availability
Both Logic Pro For Mac 11 and Logic Pro For iPad 2 arrive 13 May. The former is available as a free update for existing Logic Pro users – or £199.99 for new users via the Mac App Store – while the latter is also free for existing users, but priced at £4.99 per month or £49 per year for new users.

  • How Jeekie and Raphaella produced and recorded ‘Change’Ad feature with BandLab Opportunities
In 2023, MusicTech and BandLab hosted an opportunity for upcoming artists: to have their music recorded and mixed with a professional producer.
After blind listening to thousands of submissions, we selected Jeekie, a self-producing vocal artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as our winner. We were blown away by her talent for layering harmonies and stacking vocals — something she taught herself after watching Ariana Grande do the same — in the BandLab mobile app. Jeekie submitted a demo recording of her elegant, emotive and rich track, Change, which she recorded in her bedroom and tweaked on BandLab during her four-hour work commutes.
There was no better match for Jeekie than Raphaella, a UK-based artist and producer at Tileyard Studios, who’s produced vocals for Little Mix, Rudimental, Gorgon City and more, with credits on tracks by David Guetta. So, in 2024, we flew her over to the UK.
    Here’s what went down.

The session at Tileyard was Jeekie’s first time in a professional recording space, after only making music with voice memos and mobile apps including BandLab. Her day job takes her four hours by bus into the city, which she previously spent playing mobile games like The Sims (who can blame her?). Her commute changed dramatically when she realised she could record music using her phone’s microphone and a pair of earbuds.
When meeting with Raphaella — who “hears so many awesome ideas, harmonically,” in Jeekie’s mind — we saw Jeekie pick up tons of confidence in her artistry and learn loads of recording tips from Raphaella. Now, Jeekie’s ready to keep momentum and make more music, with more trust in her sound.

Since it was established in 2015, BandLab has supported and uplifted emerging musicians through its free-to-use DAW software and social network. They have continued to offer a whole host of features and tools for over 50 million creators to stay the course of their artistic path, connect with fans, and grow their audience.
With BandLab Opportunities, artists may get a chance to play at festivals, get their music heard by A&R at indie and major labels, get featured on some of the world’s best music publications, and much more. To get started, artists simply pick an opportunity that they are interested in and submit their music or EPK on BandLab’s Opportunity page.

  • AI lets country star Randy Travis sing again in first song released post-strokeThanks to artificial intelligence, country star Randy Travis is finally able to ‘sing’ again. The 65-year-old, who’s known for his hits like Forever and Ever, Amen and I Told You So, suffered a stroke in 2013 which left him largely unable to speak or sing.
Now, with the help of AI, Travis has released his first song in over a decade titled Where That Came From.

READ MORE: Access “royalty-free loops and one-shots” with Tracklib’s new Sounds feature

Backed by Warner Music, the project began with the creation of a proprietary AI model. The result was two models: One with 12 vocal stems, and another with 42 stems collected across Travis’s career, according to Kyle Lehning, Travis’s longtime producer [per AP].
Fellow country singer James Dupree was enlisted to lay down the demo vocals, which were then inputted into the AI model.
“I really wish somebody had been here with a camera because I was the first person to hear it. And it was stunning, to me, how good it was sort of right off the bat. It’s hard to put an equation around it, but it was probably 70, 75 per cent what you hear now,” says Lehning.
From there, areas that were deemed “not authentic” to Travis’s performance were edited with the help of recording engineer Casey Wood. Alterations were then made to things like vibrato speed, or slowing and relaxing phrases so as to capture Travis’s unique vocal quality as far as possible.
“Randy, I remember watching him when he first heard the song after it was completed. It was beautiful because at first, he was surprised, and then he was very pensive, and he was listening and studying,” said Travis’s wife Mary Travis.
“And then he put his head down and his eyes were a little watery. I think he went through every emotion there was, in those three minutes of just hearing his voice again.”
The team also hopes that the project can help educate the public on the tangible good AI can do. Cris Lacy, Co-president of Warner Music Nashville, told CBS Sunday Morning that unlike AI voice cloning sites that don’t “sound real because it’s not”, Warner’s latest use of AI to recreate Travis’s voice – with the approval of the man himself – is an example of the technology being used “for good”.

  • Jacob Collier’s wacky home studio tour: “These Grammys here are not just useful for my ego, they’re also useful as agogo bells”Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier has offered a tour of his home studio which he describes as his “ultimate anchor”.
Located in his childhood home, the room is where a young Collier first learned to walk and where the multi-Grammy-winning musician created all of his albums.

READ MORE: Jacob Collier disagrees with Rick Rubin’s philosophies: “His audience is non-creative people for whom creativity is novel”

“I’m sure at some point I’ll have a studio or studios in different parts of the world but this will always be the ultimate anchor ‘cause it’s where everything started,” he tells host Caleb Simpson.
Certainly one of the more colourful and peppy-looking studios we’ve seen, the room holds an impressive 70-odd musical instruments — or about 100 when you include “things that you can use to make sound”.
Highlights include an old Panettone tin Collier frequently hits and samples, and names as his “favourite”, a vintage typewriter, and a custom-made five-string acoustic guitar from Taylor.
When in doubt, one can also “ask the room for answers… it’s a wise room,” says Collier, who admits to spending most of his time in the room sitting in his chair at a desk that’s built from a set of old IKEA shelves.
A section of the desk has been specially designed to fit Collier’s treasured Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49 MK1 MIDI keyboard: “These [the MK1s] have been discontinued, so whenever this one breaks or I spill tea on it — which I inevitably always do — I have to beg for any unused spares, which up until now they have [had],” he says.
During the tour, the musician also reveals how he puts his multiple Grammy award trophies to good, practical use in his daily life: “These Grammys here are not just useful for my ego, they’re also useful as agogo bells,” says Collier, before grabbing one and tapping on it with a stick.
“They all have slightly different notes but I have actually recorded with them quite a lot.”
    Image: Caleb Simpson via YouTube
Elsewhere, Collier also talks about the Audience Choir plugin he built that ended up being “really helpful” on his new album Djesse Vol. 4.
“One of the things I love doing in live performances is I love getting the audience to sing,” he says, “but not just like sing along but like sing chords and stuff so I built a plugin out of all the audiences.”

  • Upgrading a Cheap LX-2BUPS UPS Board To Fix Fatal FlawsCheap uninterruptable power supply (UPS) boards that take Li-ion cells of some description seem to have cropped up everywhere the past years. Finding use in applications such as keeping single-board computers ticking along in the case of a power failure, they would seem to be a panacea. Unfortunately most of these boards come with a series of fatal flaws, such as those that [MisterHW] found in an LX-2BUPS board obtained from AliExpress. Worst of all was the deep discharge of the Li-ion cells to below 2 V, which took some ingenuity and hard work to fix this and other problems.
The patched up XR2981 boost IC with MCP809 reset IC installed. (Credit: [MisterHW])This particular board is rated for 5V at 3A, featuring the all too common TP4056 as charging IC and the XYSemi XR2981 boost converter. Since there is no off-switch or other protections on the board, the XR2981 will happily keep operating until around 2.6V, at a rather astoundingly high idle power consumption. Because of this the fixes mostly concentrated on optimizing the XR2981, by using better resistor values (R7, R8, R9), as well as adding a 3.15V MCP809 reset IC, to reduce idle power usage of the boost converter and disable it below a safe cell voltage.
The final coup de grâce was the eviction of the red LED (D6) and replacing it with the blue LED from D2, to stop the former from draining the cell as well. With these changes in place, no-load power usage dropped from nearly 900 µA to just over 200 µA, while preventing deep discharge. Although this board now has a second life, it does raise the question of what the point of these cheap UPS boards is if you have to spend money and time on reworking them before they’re somewhat acceptable. What is your go-to solution for these boards?
