  • LACM Partners with Subvers!ve to offer ScholarshipsIn honor of the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop this year, the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) has announced its partnership with the Subvers!ve Music Foundation (SMF) to provide a new round of full and partial scholarships to those with financial need for the upcoming popular Summer at LACM course “Rap & Hip Hop Change the World.” Taught by multi-time Grammy nominee and LACM Songwriting and Music Business faculty member Jameel “Jproof” Roberts, the course is designed to inspire the next generation of Hip Hop and Rap artists and musicians and to give them hands-on experience for a leg up on the competition.

The “Rap & Hip-Hop Change the World” program provides a unique program focused on artist development, lyrics, writing, beat-making and other skills. The week-long session June 26-30th focuses on creating music with a message and is tailored towards students that want to make a difference with their music. Full and partial scholarships are offered to applicants with financial need. All tracks must contain lyrics with a positive message.

The Subvers!ve Music Foundation was set up in loving memory of Harrison James Dunnett (9.14.96-12.31.16) better known as “Subvers!ive” – a Bay-area based singer, songwriter, rapper and producer born on the East Coast and raised in Marin County, CA -- to support youth in respectful, non-violent, drug-free music, changing the world one song at a time. https://subversivegang.org/

The son of Jamaican and Antiguan emigrants, Jameel “Jproof” Roberts is a multi-talented platinum-selling producer, songwriter, composer/arranger, educator and instrumentalist. He co-produced and wrote “Good Kisser” for R&B singing sensation Usher, which climbed to #1 on the US R&B/Hip Hop charts and garnered his first nomination for Best R&B song at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Jameel’s songwriting and arranging were also featured on the 2020 Grammy nominated Album of The Year, Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande. Most recently Jameel worked with Lizzo on her holiday hit “Someday at Christmas,” and he is currently working on an EP for Arista recording artist Emmy Meli and on music for H.E.R. ABOUT THE SUBVERSIVE MUSIC FOUNDATION

The Subvers!ve Foundation has been set up in loving memory of Harrison James Dunnett (9.14.96-12.31.16) better known as “Subvers!ive” – a Bay-area based singer, songwriter, rapper and producer born on the East Coast and raised in Marin County, CA. Slowly cultivating an almost cult-like following since the age of 7, Harrison pursued his passion to rap, make beats, write songs, and perform at various venues across the country ranging from Boston to Chicago to San Francisco. His most recent performances were at the Phoenix in Petaluma and The Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. He has written and produced over 40 songs and Eps including Judge Not, Mirrors, Juliet, Reservation for Two, Speak my Mind, Top Now, 4-1-5 and more including many collabs with Skyler Allen such as Back to Back and Just Wanna Live. This shining light with an insatiable lust for life was dulled at the young age of 20 in Laguna Beach, CA. He passed unexpectedly in his sleep at Casa Bella Recovery Center. He is survived by his twin sister Jacqueline Dunnett and his parents Warwick and Gail Stempel Dunnett. The Subvers!ve Music Foundation has been set up in his honor to support youth in respectful, non-violent, drug-free music, changing the world one song at a time. https://subversivegang.org/

  • Tesla wins Autopilot crash case in CaliforniaTesla scored a victory Friday after a California jury determined the automaker was not to blame for a 2019 crash that involved its advanced driver assistance system, known as Autopilot.
The jury awarded no damages to Los Angeles resident Justine Hsu, who sued Tesla in 2020 alleging negligence, fraud and breach of contract. This appears to be the first case involving Autopilot to go to trial. Reuters was the first to report the verdict.
Hsu said in her lawsuit that the Tesla Model S she was driving had Autopilot engaged when it turned into and hit a median on a city street. Airbags deployed fracturing her jaw and causing nerve damage, the lawsuit alleged.
The jury determined that Tesla was not to blame and the airbag deployed as it should. The court filing also said Tesla properly warned users not to use the system while driving on city streets, which Hsu did.
The court ruling provides a win for Tesla as it faces increased scrutiny from federal and state regulators over Autopilot as well as the upgraded versions of the system called Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving software.
Tesla vehicles come standard with a driver-assistance system branded as Autopilot. For a $6,000 upgrade, owners can purchase Enhanced Autopilot, which includes several other features.
For an additional $15,000, owners can buy “full self-driving,” or FSD — a feature that CEO Elon Musk has promised for years will one day deliver full autonomous driving capabilities. Tesla vehicles are not self-driving.
Instead, FSD includes a number of automated driving features that still require the driver to be ready to take control at all times. It includes the parking feature Summon, as well as Navigate on Autopilot, an active guidance system that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes. The system is also supposed to handle steering on city streets and recognize and react to traffic lights and stop signs.
In February, Tesla paused the rollout of its Full Self-Driving beta software in the United States and Canada following a recall of the system that federal safety regulators warned could allow vehicles to act unsafe around intersections and cause crashes.
