Cost-Optimized Raspberry Pi 5 Released With 2 GB RAM and D0 SteppingWhen the Raspberry Pi 5 SBC was released last year, it came in 4 and 8 GB RAM variants, which currently retail from around $80 USD and €90 for the 8 GB variant to $60 and €65 for the 4 GB variant. Now Raspberry Pi has announced the launch of a third Raspberry Pi 5 variant: a 2 GB version which also features a new stepping of the BCM2712 SoC. This would sell for about $50 USD and feature the D0 stepping that purportedly strips out a lot of the ‘dark silicon’ that is not used on the SBC.
These unused die features are likely due to the Broadcom SoCs used on Raspberry Pi SBCs being effectively recycled set-top box SoCs and similar. This means that some features that make sense in a set-top box or such do not make sense for a general-purpose SBC, but still take up die space and increase the manufacturing defect rate. The D0 stepping thus would seem to be based around an optimized die, with as only possible negative being a higher power density due to a (probably) smaller die, making active cooling even more important.
As for whether 2 GB is enough for your purposes depends on your use case, but knocking $10 off the price of an RPi 5 could be worth it for some. Perhaps more interesting is that this same D0 stepping of the SoC is likely to make it to the other RAM variants as well. We’re awaiting benchmarks to see what the practical difference is between the current C1 and new D0 steppings.

Historical Microsoft and Apple Artifacts Among First Christie’s Auction of Living Computers MuseumRecently the Christie’s auction house released the list of items that would be going up for sale as part of the first lot of Living Computer Museum items, under the banner “Gen One: Innovations from the Paul G. Allen Collection”. One auction covers many ‘firsts’ in the history of computing, including a range of computers like an Apple 1, and a PDP-10, as well as early Microsoft memos and code printouts. The other auctions include such items like a Gemini Spacesuit as worn by [Ed White] and a signed 1939 letter from [Albert Einstein] to [US President Roosevelt] on the discovery by the Germans of a fissionable form of uranium from which a nuclear weapon could be constructed.
We previously reported on this auction when it was first announced in June of this year. At the time many were saddened at seeing the only computer history and its related educational facilities vanish, and there were worries among those who had donated items to the museum what would happen to these now that the museum’s inventory was being put up for sale. As these donations tend to be unconditional, the museum is free to do with the item as they see fit, but ‘being sold at auction’ to probably a private collector was likely not on their mind when filling in the donation form.
As the first auctions kick off in a few days we will just have to wait and see where the museum’s inventory ends up at, but it seems likely that many of these items which were publicly viewable will now be scattered across the globe in private collections.

Kavinsky’s Nightcall breaks record for the most Shazam’d song in a single dayNightcall, the 2010 track by French electronic artist Kavinsky, has broken the record for the most Shazam’d song in a single day.
Kavinsky broke the record following his performance at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony at the Stade de France earlier this month. Joined by Belgian singer Angèle, Kavinsky’s performance fitted among sets from Phoenix, Air and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.READ MORE: Watch deadmau5 play the medieval EP-1320 while wearing a suit of armour. Currently, the track sits at number eight on the Top 200 Shazam chart, though it sat right in first place just after the ceremony. It has now been searched on the platform for a grand total of 7,012,484 Shazams at the time of writing.
The most Shazam’d song of all time still remains as Tones And I’s 2019 track Dance Monkey, though other artists who also performed at the event saw their tracks soar on Shazam too, with Phoenix’s Lisztomania and Billie Eilish’s Birds Of A Feather also having climbed the chart.
You can watch Kavinsky’s performance below:Nightcall first gained popularity when it was featured on the soundtrack to the 2011 film, Drive. It was produced with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and originally featured singer Lovefoxxx. The track was also covered by London Grammar in 2013, and is certified Silver in the United Kingdom.

Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars opened up about the supergroup following the ceremony, where he also shared that he was originally asked to sing on Nightcall. “Kavinsky has a song called Nightcall, which was produced by Daft Punk, and he asked me to sing it at the time. I never do things outside of Phoenix, so I said no and didn’t regret it,” he told Vulture.
“I thought the song was perfect and didn’t need my voice. It’s such a classic and fits so well in this condensed mix of songs, so I really wanted to incorporate it. For French people, there’s something that happened about ten years ago that proved to be an influence.”
As for the Daft Punk reunion hopefuls, Mars said, “Daft Punk doesn’t exist anymore. That was never an option. People expect them to come back to life, but they’re gone.”
Kavinsky’s most recent album, Reborn, landed in 2022. You can buy or stream it now.

“A lot of producers don’t know how to do it properly”: Slash on the “dying art” of guitar recordingThe rise of amp modellers in modern music production has left many producers incapable of recording live guitar tones, according to Guns N’ Roses legend Slash.
The guitarist, whose new blues album Orgy of the Damned was recorded using live instruments, tells Goldmine that the technique is pretty much a “dying art” these days as more and more artists embrace the convenience of digital solutions.
He adds that Mike Clink – the producer who worked on GNR’s Appetite for Destruction (1987), Use Your Illusion I and II (1991), and his recent album – is one of the few up to the task.READ MORE: Ibiza’s Pikes is extending its dancefloor phone ban to 7 days a week
“Mike Clink is a great producer, but more importantly… he’s one of the most fantastic, real-deal engineers,” says Slash. “He knows how to get a great sound out of a guitar or drums or a bass or whatever. He knows what he’s doing.”
“He’s almost one of the last of the Mohicans because it’s a dying art to be able to record a guitar through a cabinet. A lot of producers don’t even know how to do it properly anymore.”
He continues: “Mike was the guy that I knew could get these analogue sounds that we were producing and get them on tape properly and make it sound really good, which is exactly what he did. He’s also a great guy to work with, too.”
And while Slash himself has previously dabbled in digital gear — even praising the AmpliTube 5 for its ease of use, he maintains that amp sims only have a place in his writing process, and not his recording process.
At his core, the guitarist is very much still an “analogue” guy: “I love working with an amplifier because there’s something… Maybe it’s old school, but there’s something pure about the way the speakers react, the sound of the cabinet and all that kind of stuff,” he said. The post “A lot of producers don’t know how to do it properly”: Slash on the “dying art” of guitar recording appeared first on MusicTech.

According to an attendee on TikTok, Aphex Twin and the groom have been friends for years, and that the DJing gig was a wedding gift. The evening also featured British electronic musician Luke Vibert and a DJ from the London-based record label futureRetro behind the decks.
