  • Digitally Reading a Micrometer’s OutputIf you’re instrumenting your machine tools, or if you’re just curious, you might want to get granular access to the output of a digital micrometer or the like. [Tommy] set his mind to figuring out the communications protocol of the ClockWise Tools dial indicator for this very purpose. And he succeeded!
Work began by finding the clock and signal lines for the gauge. With those identified, and the signals up on an AD2 logic analyzer, it was determined that once every 40 milliseconds, the device sent a data burst of six nibbles separated by 1.58 milliseconds apiece. The device communicates the absolute position of the gauge, and the data can be readily decoded with the aid of an op-amp to help boost up the 1.5-volt logic to a more reasonable level for a modern commodity microcontroller like the Arduino Nano. From there, the information can be trucked over serial to a PC, or you can do just about anything else with it besides.
We’ve seen similar hacks performed on calipers before, too, making automated measurements a breeze. If you’re working on something that needs precise measurements down to the, well… micrometer… this project might be just the thing you’re looking for.

  • Behringer reveals smaller UB-Xa D synth which comes without a keyboardBehringer has released the UB-Xa D, a desktop version of the UB-Xa synth, which comes without a keyboard.
The company has said, about the UB-Xa, “It’s the size of a car”. While this might be ever so hyperbolic, at 104cm long it is a tad on the large size. As Behringer found that seven out of ten synth fans don’t have enough space for it, it has launched the UB-Xa D as the desktop version.

As Behringer says, “All of us spatially challenged producers can finally sleep easy.”
There’s a new promo video, which you can watch below. You can pre-order it at Andertons too. On the site, it’s listed at £699, £300 cheaper than the original version, while it’ll be $799 in the US according to Facebook.

Aside from its smaller size and the lack of a keyboard, it’s quite similar to the original UB-Xa. There are 16 voices, dual oscillators per voice, a 12/24dB filter, two LFOs, and two ADSRs per voice. But, the width is just 46cm, so it’s under half as wide as the original.
You can mount it in a rack with the ears supplied, too, if you prefer it to be in a rack rather than on your desk, and it’s easier to handle than the larger version.
Meanwhile, Behringer is exploring direct-to-customer shipping with delivery from its factory to help ensure faster delivery and access to products. The company currently uses a network of retailers and distributors – like Amazon – but it may be changing its strategy.
For more information, head to Behringer.
