A Phone? A Ham Radio? Relax! It’s Both!A lot of hams like to carry a VHF radio. Of course, nearly everyone wants to carry a phone. Now, thanks to the kv4p HT, you don’t have to carry both. The open-source device connects to your Android smartphone and turns it into a radio transceiver. You can build it yourself for about $35. Check out the video below.
The device uses an ESP32 and only transmits one watt, but it has lots of features like APRS and scanning. The brain is an ESP-WROOM-32. There’s also a ham radio “module” that is easily imported. The rest is fit, finish, and software. The PCB is fairly simple and inexpensive. A 3D-printed case completes things.
There is a new version of the PCB that hasn’t been tested as of this post, but the older version (1.5) seems to work ok, too, if you don’t want to risk trying the 1.6 version and you don’t want to wait.
We always marvel at how many building blocks you can get now. Grab a computer and a radio, and use your phone for power and a user interface. This would have been an enormous project to complete not long ago and now it is an hour’s time and $35. You’ll probably spend as much time ordering parts as building.
If your phone mostly trades cat memes, it fits right in with old ham tech. Just watch the antenna.A Phone? A Ham Radio? Relax! It’s Both!

Your Battery Holder Is Also Your Power Switch With ToggleSlotWe really like PCB-level hacks, especially ones that show ingenuity in solving a real problem while being super cheap to implement. Hackaday.IO user [Steph] wanted a cheap way to switch a wearable on and off without having to keep popping out the battery, so they came up with a tweaked battery footprint, which is also a simple slide switch.
Most people making badges and wearables will follow the same well-trodden path of just yanking out the cell or placing some cheap switch down and swallowing the additional cost. For [Steph], the solution was obvious. By taking a standard surface-mount CR2032 button cell holder footprint, extending its courtyard vertically, and moving the negative pad up a smidge, the battery can be simply slid up to engage the pad and slid down to disengage and shut off the juice. The spring section of the positive terminal keeps enough pressure on the battery to prevent it from sliding out, but if you are worried, you can always add a dummy pad at the bottom, as well as a little solder bump to add a bit more security.
Now, why didn’t we think of this before? The KiCad footprint file can be downloaded from the project GitHub page, imported into your project and used straight away.
Many of our gadgets are powered by CR2032 cells—so many so that eliminating the need for them leads to interesting projects, like this sweet USB-powered CR2032 eliminator. But how far can you push the humble cell? Well, we held a contest a few years ago to find out!Your Battery Holder Is Also Your Power Switch With ToggleSlot

Legendary Mastering Engineer Howie Weinberg Calls on KRK’s Natural SoundWhen it comes to audio mastering, Howie Weinberg might know a thing or two. With over 8,600 mastering credits and more than 90 billion streams, 21 GRAMMY® Awards (58 total nominations), three TEC Awards, two Juno Awards, and a Mercury Prize on his resume, the mastering engineer is a legend in his own right. Having worked with some of the biggest names in music across nearly every genre, from hip-hop, alternative, and R&B to rock, pop, heavy metal, and EDM, Weinberg’s name is synonymous with iconic albums like Nirvana’s Nevermind, Madonna’s Music, and Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill.
Today, after more than four decades in the industry, Weinberg is still doing what he does best, from his professional home studio in Laurel Canyon, California. “We’re in the heart of an eclectic artistic area, there’s a big recording scene here, and we’re surrounded by a lot of other famous creatives,” he explains. “The house was an old hunting lodge, built in 1910; it has a lot of energy and a great vibe. I have a personal studio here that’s as nice as any commercial space I’ve worked in, along with two other studios on the property. It’s very California.”
No matter where he sets up shop, Weinberg has continually called on KRK monitors throughout his career, today relying on KRK V-Series in the studio. “I was one of the original KRK users; when they first were released, the founder himself introduced me to the original 7000 Series speakers,” he says. “KRK has always been the number one speaker for audiophiles to have in their kits. There was something magical about that original set, and the KRK engineers did an amazing job of recreating that sound in the V-Series. Those V8s sound so good.”The post Legendary Mastering Engineer Howie Weinberg Calls on KRK’s Natural Sound first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Hook lets you legally remix songs for social media, and is now available on the App StoreAn app that lets you legally remix and mashup songs for social media has launched.
Hook, announced last October, is now available on Apple’s App Store for iPhone. It can create short snippets from popular songs for such apps as TikTok, while also compensating the sampled artist for using their music.
Hook lets you generate up to 30 seconds of remixed music. Its AI can generate mashups with other songs, different genre filters, additional sound effects, and even video effects. You can share results on TikTok, WhatsApp and Instagram. Some of the artists now available to remix on the app include Tiesto, Sadie Jean, KSHMR, Zach Hood, Quavo and Bing Crosby.
Gaurav Sharma, founder and CEO of Hook, comments: “This launch is a proud moment for our entire team as we introduce Hook to the world. Hook redefines how fans connect with the music they love, turning music listening into an active canvas for creativity.”
He adds: “For artists, this opens up entirely new horizons for expanding their influence and unlocking untapped revenue streams. We’re thrilled to lead the evolution of music expression and creativity, and we can’t wait for the world to experience music through Hook.”
When Hook was announced last year, Sharma explained that it was developed in response to many TikTok remixes being unofficial and escaping the app’s track usage detection tools.
He told TechCrunch, “We want to use AI to make it really easy for fans to remix and imprint their own creativity on their favourite moment of music. And we are doing all of it as a value proposition to the content owners and labels by acting almost like a content management system.”
Sharma also touched on Hook’s use of AI, highlighting that it’s been implemented with the goal of collaborating with artists and record labels rather than stealing their work: “Derivative songs don’t often have copyrights attached to them, so we are building a platform that leans into using AI while having a strong commitment to solving attribution and compensation problems.”
With the app launched, Hook is now looking to expand its library of songs and collaborate with more artists and labels.Learn more at hookmusic.com.

The plugin is now available to purchase from the Plugin Boutique store at £43 ($49 USD) until 31 December. After the new year, it will go back to its RRP of £69 ($79).READ MORE: “It’s like having a seasoned engineer in a classic analogue studio”: Universal Audio’s Topline Vocal Suite is a $399 vocal production plugin packed with pro presets
The Subcraft – which Ujam says comes with “built-in MIDI phrases, creative FX and a kick drum engine” – is also currently available in a bundle with two other plugins: the Void, which creates breakbeats without samplers or beat slicing, and the effect plugin the Finisher Fluxx.
All three can be bought together for £49 ($59), which is a 75 per cent discount from their collective £199 ($227) RRP. The deal expires on 1 November.
Ujam comments on its newest plugin, “Every possible bass tone and note that comes out of Subcraft has been painstakingly tuned, processed and mixed by our professional audio engineers to maximise bass power and consistency.“This means that Subcraft is single-handedly the most consistent and reliable sub-bass tool to exist on the market, and you can hear the difference no matter what speakers or headphones you’re listening on.”
Plugin Boutique is also offering up to 88 per cent off on plugins in the Ujam Beatmaker 2 series. Virtual instruments like the Idol (engineered to focus on K-pop), the Rico (reggaeton), the Vice (synthwave) and the Dope 2 (90s hip-hop) are all available at £8 and $8.08 USD (get it?). The deals will end on 3 November.
The discounts are all part of Plugin Boutique’s October Deals, which the store says takes up to 95 percent off the recommended prices of its products. See the full range of discounted plugins and software now.
Earlier this month, Ujam made its UFX Reverb, which contains 10 different reverb types, free to download. It will be available for free until 31 October.
