  • D16’s Drumazon 2 is a revamped 909 remake 17 years in the makingD16 Group has launched Drumazon 2, an updated version of its 909 drum machine emulation plugin, which originally came out sixteen years ago in 2007.

The release of Drumazon 2 took place on 9 September 2023, AKA 909 Day, a date (9/09) when the music industry celebrates Roland’s classic TR-909 drum machine.
Drumazon 2 sees a number of new additions to the plugin. The most obvious of these new improvements is a re-designed interface. It’s more modern and clearer, sporting a new keyboard-style sequencer section.
Speaking of sequencers, there’s also an editable randomiser function, so you can experiment with unexpected sequences, create happy accidents and adjust sequences to your liking afterwards.

One of the coolest new aspects of the new Drumazon is the fact that each sound is now fully synthesized. This means they can each be tweaked extensively using various parameters, which was not previously possible.
The Drumazon 2 features two buses with five effect slots – more than previously offered. There’s also what D16 is calling a Master Section, which includes a three-band multi-band compressor and a limiter with a soft clipper.
D16 is not the only brand to have developed a 909 drum machine plugin recently. In 2022, Roland launched five reimagined digital versions of its TR series drum machines, including the TR-808 and TR-909.
For 909 Day in 2022, Extralife Instruments launched a completely free online emulation of the drum machine named the ER-99. Not only can you make drum patterns online using this, you can also export them as a waveform file.
If you’re looking to add a 909 to your arsenal, check out D16 Group’s Drumazon 2 – available right now for an intro price of €89 at thomann.de.

  • Imperative Audio launches sleek black edition of its Portable Vocal BoothBritish manufacturing brand Imperative Audio has launched a black edition of its Portable Vocal Booth.
The booth provides a “professional” acoustic environment for vocalists and musicians, podcasters, and voiceover artists.

READ MORE: Kylie Minogue is “producing vocals better than us”, say her producers

The booth launched back in 2021, originally in white, and scored an 8/10 from us at MusicTech. We noted that it was easy to assemble, and had an impressive amount of separation for a semi-open space, and had plenty of flexibility for mic stand setups. We did however find that despite its portability branding, the booth did weigh over 30kg.
Despite that the PVB now has a sleek, black makeover, it appears all specifications have remained the same.
It features three high-performing layers of acoustic treatment and a specially designed roof. It has a 0.07-second reflection time (RT60, ISO 3382-2 Measurements) and an average 28.4 dBA reduction (One-Third-Octave Spectrum LZeq, IEC61260) – which Imperative Audio says is not only “unheard of” for an open booth solution, but is “fantastic by any vocal booth standards.”
The acoustically treated roof attaches to the booth and features a 30cm channel, allowing users to lower an overhead microphone into the booth with ease.
Check it out in use in the videos below:

In other recording news, Focusrite recently launched the fourth generation of its Scarlett audio interface range. The series includes three new products – the Scarlett Solo, 2i2, and 4i4, along with two new Studio bundles – which are all suited to home studio setups, or for recording on the go.
The sleek black edition of the Portable Vocal Booth comes supplied with a music stand and adjustable LED light, and also arrives packed in a protective carry bag. View full specifications and find out more at Imperative Audio.

  • “Load up a plugin you don’t know what the f**k it does – just try s**t”: Steven Wilson advises producers to experiment with new pluginsRenowned producer, prog rock musician and remixer Steven Wilson has advised producers to experiment with new plugins, revealing that this is a key part of his own process.

READ MORE: Watch Tycho show off his complex “mothership stereo effects rig” process

The advice is given in a recent video posted by Audeze. In it, Wilson highlights the different ways he approaches solo work and remixing. He also runs through the processing of an upright piano part of the track, Impossible Tightrope, which features on his new album, The Harmony Codex.
While remixing classic albums, such as The Who’s Who’s Next, there is a “pre-defined sonic goal”, the interviewer suggests, Wilson’s solo work requires a more experimental approach.
“It’s almost like the opposite. There isn’t a goal,” he says, urging viewers to think ‘Let’s just approach this like an idiot and just try shit’. “Load up a plugin you don’t know what the fuck it does and just try shit. That’s so much a part of my process.” He says.

Also in the video, Wilson, who’s now released six solo albums, explains to viewers his use of Abberant DSP’s Sketch Cassette tape effect plugin to accentuate the “rusty” imperfections of his upright piano for the track Impossible Tightrope.
He loves the “squeaky hammers” of the instrument, he says. “There was a time when I would’ve filtered all that out, but now, I’m like ‘wow, so cool!”.
Within Sketch Cassette, Wilson applies tape hiss, a Worn effect, a Wow effect and Flutter to give the sound more “personality”. A digital distortion noise is also added to sit in the background and add atmosphere.

  • “We’re letting fake DJs take over our culture”: Guti slams pre-recorded setsHouse and techno DJ/producer Guti has taken to social media to slam “fake DJs” playing “prerecorded sets”.

READ MORE: Fake Drake and The Weeknd song created with AI submitted for Grammy consideration

The post is referring to a mysterious slew of inauthentic dance music acts in recent years who, according to Guti, have ghostwriters make their music and do “dance routines” to prerecorded sets.
The Instagram post reads: “Ghostwriter fake video DJs doing dance routines with prerecorded sets – it is all a joke and we are being silent and letting them take over our culture. Why [did] we normalise this? I would love to hear your thoughts.”
In the comments section, fellow producer and acclaimed live act KiNK wades in: “The bottom line is – we have to support the real ones and give them visibility.”
“I’ve tried to learn that there’s a difference between art and entertainment; that’s all it is.” Comments drum ‘n’ bass producer, DBridge. “It’s like the reality TV of music, as it gives the audience exactly what it wants. Art asks questions and is supposed to be difficult to create and experience at times. Another thing that has helped me through similar times in my scene is accepting that I need them to be there so I can be the alternative.”
The post also drew responses from Roger Sanchez, Nicole Moudaber, Demuir, Bushwaka, and Gordo. Read below:

This is by far not the only dance music producer and DJ to have called out fake artists. MusicTech recently plucked out a YouTube clip posted by Deadmau5 in 2021, in which he reveals that “[At] most major festivals, you have to play a pre-recorded set”.
“Like EDC [Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas],” He continues, “I would be surprised if somebody actually played a set that wasn’t pre-recorded to be honest, because there’s such a big deal to the fucking artist in the production schedule and the timeline and all that stuff that they wouldn’t wanna fuck up.
“You know what a dead giveaway is to a pre-recorded set? The visuals, believe it or not. When shit is so immaculately timed that everything is lining up, that means everything is on a playback system,” he explains. “What do they do up there? Twiddle filter knobs and clap, yes absolutely. That’s all you can do.”

  • Knobcon 2023: 1010Music’s Bluebox mixer goes Eurorack1010Music has announced the Bluebox Eurorack edition – a new Eurorack mixer with effects and multichannel recording/ playback based on the popular bluebox desktop mixer.

READ MORE: Acon Digital’s Remix is the “first real-time stem separation plugin”

Bluebox is the elegant way to get high-quality mixing, effects and integrated recording and playback all in one super-optimized 30 hp form factor. Like all 1010Music products, the mixer is digital, featuring a touchscreen with knobs to let you quickly control volume, gain, 4 band parametric EQ, pan, reverb and delay effects, mute/solo and record/play functions for each track.
With Bluebox, you get 12 mono or 6 stereo tracks of sound mixing — including pre-recorded sounds. Users can independently route each track to any combination of outputs, such as four mono tracks to two stereo outputs or to the stereo headphone out, and record hours of music as 48k, 24 bit WAVs directly to the microSD card as multi-track or as the main stereo mix.
Handily, the module features the ability to playback pre-recorded tracks while recording new ones. You can also save and recall your project settings including all parameters for tracks, outputs, EQ and effects.
    Image: 1010Music
The Eurorack edition also comes with a couple of new features, including two USB-C ports for connecting external MIDI controllers and sending 2 channels of audio to your computer, as well as 6 mappable CV inputs for modulation and control. Meanwhile, MIDI input and output allow you to sync the clock with external gear for synchronised effects and metronome.
Measuring just 6″ x 5″x 1.6″, the Bluebox’s compact size lets you smack it in your rack and hit the road with a self-contained, electronic music powerhouse. Each unit is priced at $699 and will be available starting in early October.
