  • Future Retro’s Vectra synth is back in production after halting operations during COVID-19Future Retro‘s Vectra synthesizer is back in production after the brand halted manufacturing of the vector synth in 2021.

READ MORE: Behringer’s PRO-VS Hybrid Vector is a Prophet VS-inspired synth that costs just $99

The synthesizer was created in 2021 but only 100 units were shipped before production stopped. It’s expected to be available again in November or December this year.
Future Retro, a synthesizer brand based in Virginia, went out of business in 2022 due to the knock-on effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a change in management, it is resuming production of the Vectra.
The Vectra is as a distinctive hybrid instrument featuring four digital oscillators, white and pink noise generators, four ring modulators, five LFOs, six envelopes, and six filter types. Its unique interface includes four joysticks, with one serving as a mixer, allowing you to seamlessly blend audio from four sources for classic vector synthesis.

In a Facebook post announcing the exciting news, Future Retro also revealed that the brand’s discontinued 777 synth is also set to be produced again.
“We’ve experienced technical delays while updating the sequencer and porting it to a new chip,” the brand replied to a fan. “The good news is that we’ve successfully produced analogue synth voice boards, and you’ll be pleased to hear they are exact replicas of the original [777] boards with through-hole components. We’ve taken extensive measures to preserve the original sound faithfully.”
Future Retro was founded in 1997 and has released a number of instruments alongside the Vectra and 777, including the Revolution analogue bass synth, the XS semi-modular synth, the Mobius MIDI sequencer and the Zillion multi-function Eurorack module.
The Vectra is set to go back into production in November or December 2023 and will be showcased at Knobcon, a Chicago-based synth exhibition, in September. Keep up to date via future-retro.com.

  • FL Studio 21.2 is set to include stem separation tools built into the DAWA new teaser video has previewed stem separation capabilities in FL Studio’s upcoming 21.2 update, letting you extract vocals, drums and instrumentation from any track directly in the DAW.
READ MORE: Group test: Six of the best stem separation tools in 2023
In Image-Line FL Studio’s 21.2, it seems stem separation is included right in the Sample menu. A user-uploaded video runs through the new feature, and it shows an ‘extract stems from sample’ option is set to be added, with options to extract ‘drums’, ‘bass’ and ‘vocals’ specifically, with an ‘other instruments’ option as well.
According to a post on FL forums by Image-Line’s CEO, Scott Fisher, the stem extraction feature will require an internet connection. Fisher explains that by making this an online function, the process becomes “1,000 times faster” by giving users access to ‘terabyte-sized machine learning models.’
“We just wanted to make sure the model was as good as it can be,” the comment reads. “If we can run something like this online (server farm) we can split stems 1000x faster than locally, although we will provide the local option, I am making the point that online connectivity has advantages. We can do things not possible locally. Such as [terabyte]-sized Machine Learning models.”
Responding to a user asking about the DAW’s effectiveness in separating stems from classical music, Fisher says: “The model was trained on contemporary music styles. We can train it for Classical music, but don’t have plans for that in the initial release.”
How effective is the feature? Take a listen below and see for yourself.

Although there has been a flurry of new stem separation plugins and software released recently, none of the major DAWs have featured such tools. Tracktion Waveform Pro, a lesser-known DAW, is the only other to include it directly in the software.
News of FL’s stem separation tool also comes shortly after the announcement of FL Cloud Beta. Free to use while in beta, the addition of FL Cloud will allow users to search through a huge library of loops and samples right from their workstation.

  • “Elevator music or commercial music is where you’ll see people out of jobs”: Bombay Bicycle Club’s lead guitarist on AIJamie MacColl, lead guitarist for British indie band Bombay Bicycle Club, has spoken out about the potential impact of AI technology on the music industry.

In an interview with The News Movement at Reading Festival, MacColl, also a research fellow in cyber threats and cyber security at the Royal United Services Institute, addresses the possibility of AI taking his job.
“I think I would be worried if I made elevator music or commercial music where it is quite standardised,” he says. “I think that’s the space where you’ll see people being [put] out of jobs.
“In the long term, who knows, maybe it will replace us all,” a bleak MacColl says, “but I think that’s a long way off. The people who will survive in the age of AI are the people who can ask the right questions and use it rather than being replaced by it. That will probably apply to music at some point down the line as well.

“It’s all just about streamlining processes and getting rid of the hard work. Much of what we’ve seen so far is replicating existing music. Those Drake songs or The Weeknd songs I don’t think will take off because major record labels are already so litigious and opposed to any sort of violation of copyright.”
When asked if he’s ever used AI to help him write music, the Bombay Bicycle Club guitarist admits that he did once ask AI to write him lyrics but says he got “a lot of lyrics about riding bikes”.
MacColl’s not wrong on major record labels’ response to AI technology being used to replicate the voices of major artists. In August, Google and Universal Music Group revealed they were in talks over licensing issues that surround ‘deepfake’ AI music.
In June, Deezer launched new technology built to “detect and delete” music made by AI that clones the sound and style of real artists.
Hozier also recently said he would “absolutely” strike against the use of AI in music, in a similar way to how actors are currently striking against the use of AI in the TV and film industry. Will.i.am and Nick Cave have also previously voiced concerns about the technology.
Bombay Bicycle Club’s new album, My Big Day – we think – excludes any AI-generated bike-related lyrics and is out in October. Pre-order via bombaybicycle.club.

  • Best DJ Gear 2023: 8 of the best Standalone DJ Controllers in 2023Since the introduction of Pioneer’s CDJ decks in 1994, digital DJ gear has innovated tenfold. Screens have become bigger, touch screen-compatible and more detailed. Advanced features and effects have been added, and taken away, and units have become more compact.

READ MORE: Focusrite’s Scarlett 4i4 is designed for the new generation of recording artists

The next step up in terms of compatibility for DJ gear is the standalone DJ controller. Sometimes called an all-in-one DJ system or a console, a standalone controller condenses your DJ deck setup down while maintaining sturdy, quality features found on pro-grade kit. They combine the mixer, decks and screens into a singular unit; some even have speakers built-in, making them a dream for a swift setup at a house party.
So, if you’re looking to get the party started in seconds, check out this list of the eight best standalone DJ options on the market right now.
8 of the best Standalone DJ Controllers at a glance:

    Pioneer DJ OPUS-QUAD
    Denon DJ Prime 4+
    Numark Mixstream Pro+
    Pioneer XDJ-XZ
    Pioneer XDJ-RX3
    Denon DJ SC LIVE 4
    Denon DJ Prime GO
    Gemini SDJ-4000

One of the more extravagant standalone controllers on this list, the recently launched OPUS-QUAD is one of Pioneer DJ’s most aesthetically pleasing products yet. It’s the sort of DJ gear that would compliment a living room or a cool cocktail bar, instead of simply being a garish black box in the corner of the room when not in use.
The design is evidently sleek – a matte finish, a unique curved front with an inset wooden-style edging, rose gold knobs including an electrostatic touch module knob for browsing, and a cool new design on the jogwheel’s dial. In terms of functionality, while there’s only two decks, there’s a four-track mixer and four-deck playback capability. An interesting use of the OPUS-QUAD’s huge central screen is that, with certain effects, it turns into an XY pad.
    Features:

Sleek design with matte finish and rose gold knobs
Features a four-track mixer and four-deck playback capability
Central screen turns into an XY pad for certain effects
    Cloud library sync
    Price: $3,199
