  • The xx are making new music, Romy revealsBritish electronic trio The xx are making music for the first time in six years, band member Romy has said.

READ MORE: Remastered version of Brian Eno’s The Ship to land on vinyl this year

Speaking to Spanish magazine Binaural, Romy, who released her solo album Mid Air in September, reveals that all three members, Romy, Oliver Sim – who released his own debut solo album, Hideous Bastard in 2022 – and Jamie XX have been in the studio making music this year.
“Well, the three of us recognised the need for something new to explore,” she says. “We all acknowledged the importance of giving ourselves the time and space to learn and grow.”
In the interview, she also shares her insights gained from collaborating with Fred again.. and others, expressing her desire “to offer Oliver and Jamie everything I’ve gathered.”

“This year, we’ve spent time in the studio together, with no pressure, although I’m mindful that our last album was released in 2017,” she says.
During a recent conversation with Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1, Romy discussed the potential direction of a new record with The xx and her eagerness to reconnect with the guitar.
“I have no idea,” she replies regarding the potential sonic palette. “We joke about it. Imagine trance pads from me, Oliver’s vocals, and Jamie on hectic drums. It’s amusing. However, we deeply appreciate The xx’s signature sound.”
She continues, “Personally, I’m thrilled to return to the guitar and revisit that sound in a fresh way. I believe in constant evolution. That’s why I embarked on this project, to learn and collaborate with others, to bring that newfound energy to Oliver and Jamie.”
Romy performed her solo show at All Points East festival in London this summer. MusicTech was there to witness the event, describing it as a “euphoric, technicolour performance” that saw the once introverted singer come out of her shell more.
Stream Romy’s solo album, Mid Air, via Bandcamp, and Oliver Sim’s Hideous Bastard via oliver-sim.com.

  • AMSynths share the DIODE-01 Eurorack module, a Roland System 101 cloneAMSynths is working on the DIODE-01, a clone of the Roland System 101 synthesiser module with some features from the 102 section also incorporated in.

READ MORE: IK Multimedia’s UNO Synth Pro X is what the synth community deserved from the start

The DIODE-01 is a pretty accurate replica of the 101 module, but with elements from the 102. It follows the layout and design of the 101, apart from the keyboard and its associated control panel. On the left, there’s an ADSR envelope and LFO, as well as the sample and hold from the 102.
Then there are the large oscillator sections, which have four waveforms, and pitch and range control with various modulations. Next is the audio mixer, which includes the noise generator from the 101 and ring modulation from the 102. It all goes into the high and low-pass diode filter the synth gets its name from. And, there’s a voltage-controlled amplifier.
The DIODE-01 is, at its essence, a wide Eurorack module. You could put it into a Moog Mother-32 60HP case, while it’ll also be available as a PCB & Panel DIY kit. However, you’ll have to source your own components.
The prototype is expected to be ready for next month, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for.
AMSynths is a small synthesiser manufacturer led by electronics engineer Rob Keeble. Keeble has plenty of experience when it comes to vintage synths, being behind both the Behringer System 100 and ARP 2500 modules.
Last month, Gear News reported that AMSynths revealed a Moog-like module, the AM-CP3 Console Panel. It’s actually a replica of the Moog CP3 Console Panel mixer module, and offers four channels of mixing.

  • Avid launches clip-based creation tool Pro Tools Sketch to support “growing needs of modern creators”Avid has launched its new non-linear, clip-based creation tool Pro Tools Sketch, which is also available as a free iPad app.
According to the company, Pro Tools Sketch has been “years in the making”, and enables musicians to capture new ideas and freely build tracks by utilising a vast library of free loops, virtual instruments and effects.

READ MORE: AVID acquired by private equity firm Symphony Technology Group for $1.4 billion

Pro Tools Sketch is a “significant expansion” of the Pro Tools music creation workflow. Users can now start with clip-based “sketches” where loops, MIDI, and recordings can be freely organised, played, and exported. These Sketches can also be moved to the Pro Tools timeline for further production.
This new tool features 16 tracks and “virtually unlimited” scenes. There’s also over 1 GB of loops on offer and a variety of onboard effects. Users can quickly try out audio and MIDI loops in the browser and drag them into the launcher where they can be tweaked and experimented with.
Organic audio and MIDI can be recorded and edited alongside loops and then organised into linear song arrangements, too. View more in the videos below:

“Every music creator wants to capture inspiration when it arises and act on it precisely at that magical moment – and it should be simple and easy. We made Sketch to go far with ideation, letting any user start experimenting with their notions right away and then simply hop into Pro Tools when they’re ready to take them further forward,” says David Toomey, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Audio and Music Solutions at Avid.
“We’re incredibly excited for beginners and pros alike to work out non-linear ideas with total convenience, then mix and edit in Pro Tools. Creators never stop generating new ideas and Sketch lets their output keep pace with their individual creative sparks. Not a single moment wasted, not a single idea lost.”
The Pro Tools Sketch iPad app is available for free via the Apple App Store. The Pro Tools 2023.9 update is now available to all Pro Tools customers on an active subscription or perpetual licence with a current Software Updates + Support Plan, as well as all users of the free Pro Tools Intro application.

  • “More than half of existing positions” reportedly cut at Moog Music’s North Carolina manufacturing plant“More than half of existing positions” at Moog Music’s Asheville, North Carolina manufacturing plant have been cut, according to reports.
In June, the brand was acquired by inMusic, the company which also owns Akai, Alesis, M-Audio, Numark, and others.

Regional news title, the Citizen Times, has reported that possibly more than half of existing jobs have been cut, including most of the production positions.
After inMusic’s 13 June acquisition, payroll was reportedly cut by more than a dozen people. Most of the synthesisers will now be made in Taiwan, sources say. Now it is believed around 30 jobs have been cut, but the publication reports the exact number is unclear.
Local and corporate staff and spokespeople did not return contact to any outreach by the Citizen Times, and many current and ex-workers chose not to comment, but did confirm to the publication that layoffs had taken place.
Michelle Moog-Koussa, daughter of Robert Moog and executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation and Moogseum (these are separate entities to Moog), lives in the Asheville area and told the publication on 22 September that she recently learned about the layoffs, but declined comment further.
Synth Anatomy has also shared social media posts which are said to be from staff who have lost their jobs. One person writes that “Moog [is] about to change forever”, another says it was “a good run” but that it is “game over.”
Back in July, Benn Jordan, a professional producer, musician and YouTuber, shared his predictions for the future of the music production industry in a video entitled The Private Equity Buyout Of Music Production. Within the video, he predicted layoffs for Moog as well as other manufacturing brands. At the time, he remarked, “I honestly hope I’m wrong.”
Moog and inMusic are yet to provide official confirmation of the reports. MusicTech has also reached out for comment.
