  • Piggyback Board Brings Touch Sensing to USB Soldering IronThe current generation of USB-powered soldering irons have a lot going for them, chief among them being portability and automatic start and stop. But an iron that turns off in the middle of soldering a joint is a problem, one that this capacitive-touch replacement control module aims to fix.
The iron in question is an SJ1 from Awgem, which [DoganM95] picked up on Ali Express. It seems well-built, with a sturdy aluminum handle, a nice OLED display, and fast heat-up and cool-down. The problem is that the iron is triggered by motion, so if you leave it still for more than a second or two, such as when you’re soldering a big joint, it turns itself off. To fix that,[DoganM95] designed a piggyback board for the OEM controller with a TTP223 capacitive touch sensor. The board is carefully shaped to allow clearance for the existing PCB components and the heater cartridge terminals, and has castellated connections so it can connect to pads on the main board. You have to remove one MOSFET from the main board, but that’s about it for modifications. A nickel strip makes contact with the inside of the iron’s shell, turning it into the sensor plate for the TTP223.
[DoganM95] says that the BA6 variant of the chip is the one you want, as others have a 10-second timeout, which would defeat the purpose of the mod. It’s a very nice bit of design work, and we especially like how the mod board nests so nicely onto the OEM controller. It reminds us a little of those Quansheng handy-talkie all-band mods.

  • HEART AT CRYPTO.COM ARENALegendary Rock band Heart played at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, CA on Monday night (3/3). Their first concert series since 2019, Heart began their Royal Flush tour in April, 2024. Following the first 17 shows, the tour was halted as lead singer Ann Wilson had to undergo chemo therapy for medulloblastoma. The tour resumed in Las Vegas, NV in late February (2/28 and 3/1) where the band performed 13 songs the first night and 14 the second. Now, the group is back to playing a full setlist of 18 songs. Heart was formed over 50 years ago in Seattle, WA by sisters Ann (Vocals) and Nancy Wilson (Guitar/Vocals). In 2013, the original group was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, though since the group's inception, the band has had quite a few lineup changes. In 2023, Heart reformed itself around guitarist Ryan Wariner, keyboardist Paul Moak, bassist Tony Lucido, and drummer Sean T. Lane—guitarist Ryan Waters was the only returning member from their 2019 lineup. Following an opening set from British rockers Squeeze, Heart took the stage at 9:30 PM. Before their performance, the group’s tour photographer came onstage to announce that Ann Wilson would be performing seated as she had fractured her elbow. One elated fan received a setlist signed by the entire band. A video montage showed the audience the year-by-year evolution of the band where a single event represented each year (whether historical or pop culture related), concluding in 2024. Afterwards, projections on the curtains of the stage signified not only a new year for the band, but that the show was about to begin. The first song of the night was “Bebe Le Strange.” As Ann Wilson said, the set represented each part of their career, and with songs like “Straight On,” “Crazy On You,” “Alone,” "What About Love,” “Magic Man,” and the final song, “Barracuda,” the setlist did just that. Heart also covered David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California,” and “The Ocean,” and Lovemongers' “Sand.” They closed the night with “4 Edward" from Ann Wilson’s solo catalog. Photos by Criss CainThe post HEART AT CRYPTO.COM ARENA first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

  • “I don’t f**k with Spotify anymore”: Snoop Dogg to cut ties with Spotify in favour of Web3 platform Tune.FMWhat with him selling “virtual cannabis goods” in the metaverse and claiming to run an NFT-loving social media account, Snoop Dogg has been intrigued by the blockchain for quite some time. Now, the rapper has decided to take the plunge and move his work over to blockchain-based streaming service Tune.FM.
Despite currently having nearly 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Snoop plans to gradually migrate his entire catalogue over to Tune.FM. “I don’t fuck with Spotify anymore,” he reveals in a Billboard exclusive. “I’m only on Tune.FM.”

READ MORE: James Blake: “There’s money in streaming services – it’s just being diverted to the wrong places”

The decision comes after a long-spanning dispute with Spotify over royalties. In December 2023, Snoop told the Business United podcast that the payout for hitting a billion streams was ridiculously low. “They sent me some s**t from Spotify where I got a billion streams,” he recalled. “My publisher hit me. I said, ‘Break that down, how much money is that?’ That s**t wasn’t even $45,000.”
In response, a Spotify spokesperson told TMZ that “it’s well documented that a billion streams on Spotify generates millions of dollars to rights holders. It’s unfortunate to hear that Spotify’s payments didn’t make it through to Snoop.”

Musicians are increasingly coming forward claiming they have receives low payouts from Spotify’s. However, the streaming giant claims its royalty payments are fair. “Spotify paid out $10 billion to the music industry last year and has paid out $60 billion all time,” the company told Guitar.com last month.
“Our music subscription competitors haven’t reported their subscriber figures or music industry payouts in years, because they pay far less,” Spotify concluded.
Regardless of Spotify’s claims, Snoop is still jumping ship. His new streaming home Tune.FM is built on a promise that “when a tune gets played, the artist gets paid”.
According to a Tune.FM spokesperson: “Tune.FM operates under non-exclusive licensing agreements, enabling us to unlock new revenue streams for under-monetised catalogues and artist IP on both our streaming platform and marketplace.”
The Web3 streaming platform has its own native cryptocurrency (JAM) which has instant micropayments per second streamed. Once a user signs up, they can spend JAM tokens to stream tracks, invest in artists and earn royalties. Tokens can also gain access to exclusive content.
One such track users can stream is Spaceship Party, Snoop’s first project being streamed exclusively on Tune.FM. The track even features a violin performance from Tune.FM’s founder, Andrew Antar.
Antar and Snoop first crossed paths at the Crypto Ball, a celebration that marked President Donald Trump’s inauguration back in January. It didn’t take much to convince Snoop of the platform’s perks.
“We are thrilled to welcome Snoop Dogg as the face of Tune.FM,” Antar tells Billboard. “Snoop is the OG pioneer who is always on the cutting edge of technology and new ways of doing business. He totally gets it, and we are ready to take on the world together.”
In the future, Billboard reveals that Snoop plans to use Tune.FM to host fan giveaways, including “a private event at his house and VIP prize tiers”.

  • Deadmau5 sells his catalogue for $55 million: “We inherit a legacy that changed music forever”deadmau5 has sold his catalogue to Create Music Group for $55 million. The deal also means Create acquires the rights to the mau5trap Records catalogue, meaning the company now owns more than 4,000 new songs in total.
The deal also marks the beginning of a new partnership between Create Music Group and deadmau5 – real name Joel Zimmerman – who will work together on future deadmau5 records and mau5trap label releases.

READ MORE: Deadmau5 slams 3LAU for bragging about DJing a Trump inauguration ball: “What very little respect I had for you is gone”

The deal means that CMG now owns all of Zimmerman’s musical work over the past 26 years, from hits like Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff and Strobe to the 2013 Grammy-nominated Album Title Goes Here.
Equally, the acquiring of mau5trap also means CMG owns rights to the label’s entire catalogue. In 2017, Mixmag readers voted mau5trap among the Top 50 Labels of the Decade, placing it at number 9. That means the company now holds stakes in a plethora of electronic records.

For example, mau5trap was an early supporter of Skrillex, releasing the producer’s second EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. CMG now owns copyrights for the record, as well as other records like Rezz’s 2017 debut record, Mass Manipulation.
Speaking about the deal, deadmau5 says: “I have worked closely with Jonathan [Strauss, CEO of CMG] and Alex [Williams, COO of CMG] for nearly two decades now, building my own career as well as the artists on mau5trap. We didn’t need to look far when we were considering a partner to help get it all to the next level. With Create, I feel the music is going to reach more.”
Strauss is equally as enthusiastic about acquiring the deadmau5 brand. “When deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didn’t just create a brand – he sparked a movement,” he says. “His vision redefined electronic music, pushing boundaries and reshaping the industry.”
“Now, as the stewards of deadmau5 and mau5trap’s legendary catalogue, we inherit a legacy that changed music forever. Joel’s influence reaches far beyond sound – his mastery bridges music, gaming, and technology, inspiring a new generation to think bigger. This is more than an acquisition; it’s a responsibility.”
Looking forward, the plan is to expand and build upon the deadmaus5 and mau5trap legacy. Plans are in the works for CMG and Zimmerman to work together on remastering and re-releasing key deadmau5 records, as well as launching exclusive new content across a range of platforms.
There will also be discussions surrounding new collaborative work, brand partnerships and ventures into gaming. What with Zimmerman’s proven love of glitch music and video games, with tracks like Professional Griefers making it onto FIFA 13’s soundtrack, it only makes sense that he involves himself in more gaming projects. CMG even hint at VR as a potential avenue of interest.
