• Joji at the Crypto.com Arena in Los AngelesThe career trajectory of the Japanese singer-songwriter and rapper Joji, real name George Kusunoki Miller, is an interesting one. Joji started his career as the oddball comedy character ‘Filthy Frank’ on YouTube before pursuing music full-time in 2017. His music is the complete opposite of his loud online persona. Focusing on minimalistic down tempo production, somber themes and soulful vocals. Now with three albums under his belt, he’s built a dedicated fan base big enough to play the 20,000 seat venue the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Oct 6.

Opening for Joji that night were rappers SavageRealm, Lil Toe (Ammo), and DJ Kenny Beats who helped rile up the crowd with their anthemic music and fun personalities. Joji began his set in dramatic fashion appearing on the venue’s screens next to a banner of his show teasing his arrival. Joji opened the night with "Sanctuary'' standing on top of high columns in the middle of the stage alongside his band. These columns were LCD screens that created a cinematic ambience to the night.

Joji's set list consisted of a mix of all his albums (Ballads 1, Nectar, Smithereens) and mixtape (In Tongues). It's easy to connect to the music as it's filled with relatable topics of love and heartbreak. The whole crowd was singing along to every lyric with emotion - especially on the catchy tracks like "YEAH RIGHT" or tender ballads like "Like You Do."

Joji’s personality shined all night as he blended his love of comedy and music. This setlist included small skits – like Joji going on his pee break and SavageRealm (who did double duty by opening and DJing Joji's set) sharing his favorite viral videos. The chemistry between Joji and SavageRealm was entertaining to watch as they bickered and cracked jokes through the night.

Towards the end of the night Joji took another pee break and came back with his team as the DJs group Yebi Labs. The atmosphere was club-like as they played electronic mashups of his music while hyping with the crowd. Joji used this time to sign autographs and throw items to the crowd. After the DJ set Joji returned for chilling performances of “Die for You,” “Like You Do” and “Gimme Love.” His voice is soft yet powerful. The inclusion of having a full band on stage also helped create a more dynamic sound. He ended his set with “Glimpse of Us, ” the perfect song to end as this song is his first single to debut in the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100.

The R4 MultiTrak features four channels to record into, two XLR/TS combo inputs, built-in high-quality microphones, multi-track recording with a bounce feature, and onboard effects. It operates on four AA batteries or via USB-C, making it highly portable.

Each track has a 3-band EQ, alongside options to control the pan of our audio. The built-in effects on offer are an echo, and a reverb, making it a swift solution for fleshing out ideas on the go.
Going further, the Zoom R4 MultiTrak offers extensive compatibility and flexibility for users. It supports microSD cards of up to 1TB, meaning you have more than enough storage space for extended recording sessions.
Additionally, the recorder is equipped with a 2-inch colour LCD screen that simplifies user interface navigation, making it user-friendly and efficient for quick adjustments and settings.
    Zoom
Zoom, which, we must add, is the audio tech manufacturer and not the communications technology company, has released a number of portable recording products previously. In 2022, it launched the AMS series of miniature, rugged audio interfaces.
If you’re in the market for a portable recording solution, you may also be interested in Teenage Engineering’s TP-7 compact audio recorder. This is designed for interviews, podcasts, voice memos, live performances and field recordings, as opposed to recording instruments. Boasting a range of quirky features and a stunning design, but will set you back $1,499.
The Zoom R4 MultiTrak, however, is set to cost approximately just €219/£189/$230. It’s set to launch on 1 December 2023.

  • AI-powered app, Hook, lets fans remix their favourite songs legally for social mediaAn AI-powered app which helps fans create remixes is set to launch next year. The app, called Hook, creates short audio clips for social media such as TikTok which also compensate the artist for use of their music.
A private beta is launching next month, but no official release date for 2024 has been revealed yet.

Within just a few scrolls of your TikTok For You Page, you’re bound to come across audio from popular songs which has been sped up or slowed down. Many of these remixes escape track usage detection tools which prevent copyrighted music from being used online without artist permission.
Hook, however, lets social media users create remixes, but still ensures artists are compensated for their use. Speaking to TechCrunch, Hook’s founder and CEO Gaurav Sharma explained, “We want to use AI to make it really easy for fans to remix and imprint their own creativity on their favourite moment of music. And we are doing all of it as a value proposition to the content owners and labels by acting almost like a content management system.
“Derivative songs don’t often have copyrights attached to them, so we are building a platform that leans into using AI while having a strong commitment to solving attribution and compensation problems.”
As the publication reports, users on Hook will be able to pick a short snippet of a song, of less than 60 seconds, and give it their own creative imprint. They will also be able to explore remixes made by other fans, and can export clips directly to popular social networks.
Sharma has said that the app doesn’t aim to let people export tracks in MP3 format. The company has already raised $3 million in seed funding.

  • Kenny Beats teases new season of The Cave YouTube seriesGrammy-nominated rap producer Kenny Beats is revamping his popular collaborative music production-focused video series, The Cave for a fourth season.

The LOUIE producer took to X on Wednesday 11 Oct, to write, “Ok fine […] who wants a new season of The Cave?”
On the show, he invites artists, friends and familiar collaborators to his LA-based studio of the same name to freestyle over beats they make together there and then. The first series started in March 2019, and the show ran for 35 episodes across three seasons, ending in 2022.

Some of the most-watched episodes feature the likes of Thundercat, Marc Rebillet, Slowthai, Lil Yachty, Doja Cat, Vince Staples.
One X user responded Kenny Beats on X, saying, “I was thinking last night “Where did bro go?””
Kenny responded: “You know just 2 Grammy nominations, started one of the biggest discords in music, became #1 music twitch streamer, dropped my first solo album on XL records, a Tiny Desk, Teenage Engineering / Fender collabs, a world tour, produced a few songs and albums etc.. nothing much [sic]”

Others have also reacted to the news. SoundCloud even responded simply with “me”. Another wrote, “Yes! I know The Cave fanbase can be annoying but I’m really grateful that you’ve continued to do this show, work with people you enjoy working with on it, and putting me on to so many artists in the process (Remi Wolf, Teezo, and Boldy James to name a few).”
In 2021, Kenny, who’s become appreciated by fans for revealing his production techniques, told Rolling Stone, “In the past, all I ever thought about was making music, but I need to use my platform for something bigger. I need to help give somebody else a shot who might not be getting it.”
One artist fans are asking for another collaboration with is Benny Sings. In April, MusicTech spoke to the Dutch musician and singer-songwriter about the process of Kenny producing his tenth studio album, Young Hearts. Kenny gave the music “that extra slap”, he said.
Kenny Beats touched down at Glastonbury Festival in the UK this summer to deliver a fun and unpredictable DJ set. MusicTech was there to witness it, and during the set, he told the crowd, “Before I get the fuck outta here…If you make music don’t ever fucking stop. Keep going. Make art, you keep going.”
