Congress prepares to continue throwing money at NASA’s Space Launch SystemCongress will pour billions more dollars into the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and its associated architecture, even as NASA science missions remain vulnerable to cuts.
Both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees recommend earmarking around $25 billion for NASA for the next fiscal year (FY 24), which is in line with the amount of funding the agency received this year (FY 23). However, both branches of Congress recommend increasing the portion of that funding that would go toward the Artemis program and its transportation cornerstones, SLS and the Orion crew capsule.
Those programs would receive $7.9 billion per the House bill or $7.74 billion per the Senate bill, an increase of about $440 million from FY 2023 levels.
Meanwhile, science missions are looking at cuts of around that same amount, with the House recommending a budget of $7.38 billion versus $7.79 billion in FY 2023.
The increase in funding is just the latest sign that Congress is not backing down from the mission architecture of the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon by 2025. That plan is dependent on having a heavy-lift rocket capable of giving enough boost to deliver a fully fueled and crewed capsule to lunar orbit. For this task, Congress devised SLS and Orion, programs built on legacy NASA and (ostensibly) cost-saving for that reason.
But this decision has been met with an enormous amount of criticism, principally for the incredible price tag of both programs — price tags that will keep rising as the program continues to develop. For example, overall costs for SLS have tipped past $24 billion since the project was first conceived in 2010. But because the rocket is not reusable, despite it having a successful first flight last November, Congress will have to spend many more billions for each subsequent mission.
That’s not to mention the costs of Orion or the mobile launch tower from which SLS takes flight.
In May, NASA’s Office of Inspector General issued a devastating audit of the program, which found that delays to the SLS booster and engine contracts have resulted in an approximately $6 billion cost-overrun. The report further criticizes the use of cost-plus contracts, a fee structure by which essentially all of the risk is taken on by the government.
Overall, NASA received $25.4 billion in funding for FY ’23, with $2.6 billion earmarked toward SLS, $1.34 billion to Orion, and $1.48 to the Human Landing System contract programs. Science programs — which include the Mars Sample Return mission and Earth science missions — received $7.8 billion overall.

Limited run of revamped Sonicware ELZ_1 synth launched by former creatorThe ELZ_1 Play – an upgraded version of the Sonicware ELZ_1 synthesiser – which itself is currently out of production – has been launched in a limited run by a creator who worked on the original.

The ELZ_1 was released back in 2019, and eventually ceased production due to chip shortages which affected a multitude of global brands.
Now, all the same magic of the ELZ_1 returns in the brand new Play edition, created by Dr Yu Endo, who worked on the original. The ELZ_1 Play hosts 14 synth engines and 26 effects just like the original, but also hosts a new four-track looper that supports one-touch record, playback and overdub.
It also hosts a velocity-sensitive keyboard, built-in stereo speakers, USB audio and MIDI. Check it out in the video below:The synth is being launched as part of Dr Endo’s Dr.’s Journey initiative, where he works on a mass of manufacturing projects such as electronic instrument development, limited edition models, goods, related accessories, sample packs and patches.
The products made at Dr.’s Journey are mainly “trial products with a strong Endo flavour”, experimental products, and new ideas, so they are offered in small runs. The initiative keeps Sonicware “free to expand and support its current product range”.
Initially limited to 200 units, the ELZ_1 Play run has been expanded to 250 following the initial allocation of pre-orders completely selling out. The extra 50 models are now available to pre-order with shipping expected to begin in November. It has not been confirmed whether or not the ELZ_1 Play will eventually be available as an official launch from Sonicware in the future.
Pricing for the ELZ_1 Play sits at $599.

Kaytranada: “I want to be remembered as one of the greats in terms of producing”Canadian DJ and record producer Kaytranada has opened up about his career aspirations and the legacy he wishes to leave behind.
READ MORE: Cuckoo: AI is “a reminder of how important it is to take your artistry seriously”
In a new chat with Billboard, the Grammy-winning musician explains that while recognition from the Recording Academy was never his goal, being nominated for the award has, in some ways, changed how he approaches his music-making.
“My idols, the people I looked up to, they never really had Grammys, so it was, whatever,” Kaytranada explains. “But being nominated, it’s a whole different thing. It kind of alters what you’re aiming for.”
The musician admits that he’s now “trying to make Grammy-winning albums.”
“When I won a Grammy, it really felt like I graduated or something. Like, I have something that means a lot. “Your name is in history forever.”
Expanding on his career aspirations, Kaytranada says that “I just want to be remembered as one of the greats in terms of producing, not only dance and electronic but also just production in general,” adding that he’d love to produce an entire album for a pop star looking to reinvent his/ her sound.
“It’s a matter of longevity, too – and, you know, just happiness. Like, as long as you’re comfortable and you’re happy with your life, that’s a form of success – but don’t forget the money part.”
Elsewhere, Kaytranada also speaks about his journey to self-acceptance as well as the struggles he’s faced navigating the music industry as a gay producer.
“Like, how are you going to accept a gay producer?” he recalls thinking. “That was not seen at the time. It seemed impossible.”
To make matters worse, mainstream representations of gay men early in his career also proved difficult for Kaytranada to relate to.
“I couldn’t relate to that. I just couldn’t, and I was like, ‘I cannot be gay,’ because I was not into those things,” he says. “That was really a confusing period of my life.”
