Reddit’s CEO lashes out, Twitter gets evicted, and NYC delivery workers get a pay raiseHi, lovely people, and welcome to Week in Review (WiR), TechCrunch’s regular newsletter that highlights the top news in tech over the past week (or so). If you haven’t already, sign up here to get WiR in your inbox every Saturday.

Reddit’s CEO lashes out: Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is not backing down amid protests against API changes made by the platform, Ivan writes. In interviews with The Verge, NBCNews and NPR, Huffman defended business decisions made by the company to charge third-party apps, saying that the API wasn’t designed to support these clients.
Subreddits go dark: In related Reddit news, more than 300 subreddits, including popular ones like r/aww, r/music r/videos, and r/futurology, went dark — preventing users from accessing them — indefinitely after a large protest against Reddit’s API changes ends on June 14. Over the last several days, (June 12-14), thousands of subreddits have joined in solidarity to protest Reddit’s aforementioned API changes, which will potentially shut down many third-party apps.
Twitter evicted: Twitter owes three months’ rent to its Boulder, Colo., landlord, and a judge has signed off on evicting the tech giant from its office there, court documents show. Since its takeover by Elon Musk, Twitter’s business has more or less fallen into disarray, and there have been numerous reports of unpaid bills.
Carvana comes crashing down: Carvana’s big rally is now looking more like a blip on the radar, Harri and Alex write. The company has secured billions in equity and debt financing since launching in 2013, and it’s bought a couple of startups — namely, Car360 and Adesa. But through it all, the company has yet to record a real profit.
Ransomware gang lists victims: Clop, the ransomware gang responsible for exploiting a critical security vulnerability in a popular corporate file transfer tool, has begun listing victims of the mass-hacks, including a number of U.S. banks and universities. The Russia-linked ransomware gang has been exploiting the security flaw in MOVEit Transfer, a tool used by corporations and enterprises to share large files over the internet, since late May.
Check skin conditions with Google Lens: Google’s enhancing Google Lens, its computer vision-powered app that brings up information related to the objects it identifies, with a useful new feature. Lens can now surface skin conditions similar to what you might see on your own skin, such as moles and rashes — working from an uploaded photo.
Minimum wage for NYC delivery workers: New York City has established a new minimum wage for food delivery workers who deliver for platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub and Relay. It should be a historic win for gig workers, but Rebecca writes about how both delivery workers and companies are unhappy with it.
YouTube lets more users monetize: YouTube is lowering the requirements for creators to get access to monetization tools under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Specifically, the company is expanding its shopping affiliate program to U.S.-based creators who are already a part of YPP and have more than 20,000 subscribers.

TechCrunch’s podcast collection is the gift that keeps on giving — although this writer might be a little biased. Equity was off this week, but The TechCrunch Podcast revisited Inside Startup Battlefield, the four-part series that takes you behind TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield competition.
Found, meanwhile, featured Amy Brown, the co-founder and CEO of Authenticx, a Midwestern startup that helps insurance companies and medical organizations extract data from their call centers using AI.
And on Chain Reaction, Patrick Kaminski, the director of digital innovation for web3 and metaverse at L’Oreal, and Manon Cardiel, head of strategic planning and partnerships within web3 and metaverse at L’Oreal, spoke about their experiences in the burgeoning blockchain space.

Corporate America makes bets on AI: Hype or not, the potential of AI has tech companies enamored, and businesses large and small have begun betting heavily on efforts that leverage AI in some fashion to spur their growth to new heights. Alex and I investigate.
Small VCs have a diversity impact: Smaller funds — especially those that have $50 million or less in assets under management — are helping to usher in a new wave of diversity within venture capital. As Dominic writes, the latest crop of investors stems from historically overlooked or marginalized communities that are setting up funds and then investing back in those funds.
Approaching building AI in healthcare: Rebecca writes about how some founders are approaching AI in healthcare with the appropriate amount of caution, considering the ethical implications of their startups’ technologies before deploying them widely to customers.

Bebop Rhythmic Words 1&2: Unleashing Jazz Improvisation through Rhythm. Jazz Piano TutorialIntroduction: In the world of jazz improvisation, we often emphasize the importance of choosing the right notes over chord changes. However, today we’re going to shift our focus to another crucial aspect of improvisation: rhythm. In this video, we’ll explore the concept of using rhythmic words to guide our bebop improvisation. By incorporating these rhythmic phrases into our playing, we can enhance our sense of timing and develop a stronger connection between our left and right hand movements. So, let’s dive into this exciting exercise and discover how it can transform your improvisational skills.
Setting the Foundation: To begin, we’ll work with two related rhythmic words and apply them to a walking bass-line using half notes. This approach allows us to establish a solid foundation by feeling the downbeat in our left hand while understanding the rhythmic placement in our right hand. It’s crucial to have a clear picture of where we start and end in order to create a cohesive musical statement.
Word 1: The first word starts on beat 2 and ends on the “and-of-4.” Then, it begins again on beat 2 and concludes on the “and-of-3.” By focusing on the note played on the “and-of-4,” we can think ahead to the next chord in the progression and choose a note that complements it. Additionally, we can enhance the shape of word 1 by incorporating a leap on the final note, either ascending or descending. This melodic contour adds further interest and character to the phrase.
Word 2: Word 2 is a variation of word 1, with the addition of a pickup note at the beginning of each part. This time, we start on the “and-of-1” for both iterations, but we still conclude on the same beats as in word 1. To create a pleasing melodic shape, consider playing a leap on the pickup note, adding an extra touch of musicality to the phrase.
Application to a Jazz Standard: Now it’s time to put these rhythmic words into practice. Choose a jazz standard or a specific section and begin by playing the melody alongside the bass line. Once you’re comfortable, integrate word 1 into your improvisation, repeating it a few times over the progression. Then, transition to word 2 and play it in the same manner. This exercise serves as an excellent starting point for conversing in the bebop language, allowing you to develop a stronger rhythmic foundation.
Key Considerations and Further Practice: As you embark on this rhythmic journey, remember that playing at high speeds is not the goal. Instead, focus on accurately placing your phrases on the right beats and maintaining a steady and consistent bass rhythm with your left hand. In the next video, we’ll explore two additional rhythmic words, expanding our rhythmic vocabulary even further.
Accessing Additional Resources: For those seeking further support and resources, our “exclusive access” members have exclusive access to the PDF for this lesson. Simply navigate to the membership tab and follow the link provided in the latest post. You’ll find the PDF for today’s exercise at the top, along with a selection of other valuable resources. Basic members will have access to all PDFs published in the last two months.

Additionally, to access PDFs beyond your window of accessibility, consider exploring our Music Theory Journal, available on mDecks.com. This comprehensive almanac contains all the content we’ve published so far, providing a valuable reference for your musical journey.
Conclusion: By incorporating rhythmic words into your bebop improvisation, you’ll discover a new level of rhythmic sophistication and expressiveness. Remember, while notes are important, it is the rhythm that truly brings an improvisation to life. Through the exercises demonstrated in this video, you can begin to develop a stronger sense of timing, phrasing, and melodic contour in your improvisations.

Erica Synths & Rich Hawtin Preview Bullfrog Subtractive SynthCreated by Erica Synths & Richie Hawtin, Bullfrog is an educational electronic music instrument designed to captivate and inspire both youth and professionals alike. Bullfrog invites you to unlock musicality while combining the thrill of electronic music production with a comprehensive learning experience.
Bullfrog is a classical subtractive synthesiser – it consists of several “modules” for sound generation – VCO, NOISE GENERATOR - and treatment – VCF, VCA/DELAY, as well as “modules” that generate control and modulation signals to control them – ENVELOPE GENERATORS and SAMPLE & HOLD. The Bullfrog will not make the sound on its own unless it is patched – using eurorack patch cables to interconnect the “modules” or by inserting voice cards that create internal connections between the “modules” in a specific way and add extra functionality, like sampler/looper, sequencer, groovebox, etc. This approach better helps to understand functionality of a subtractive synthesizer and the principles of sound design with instruments like these.
In order to provide a well rounded understanding of the functionality of this synthesizer and sound synthesis in general, a comprehensive user manual is created to accompany the learning process.
Bullfrog will be available via ericasynths.lv and the best electronic music retailers across the globe on 10th of August 2023. Learn more & subscribe via bullfrog.ericasynths.lv
Thoughts on Bullfrog by Richie Hawtin"Electronic Music is as popular as ever and its traditions and frequencies now stretch around the world, uniting people across language and cultures. For me, one of the most exciting parts of creating with a synthesiser is the playful experimentation that inspires and pushes the imagination. Whether the intention is to create abstract frequencies or sounds inspired by real-life, the route one takes is personal and often surprising. It is within these investigations where the beauty of synthesis really comes alive, and which often unlocks a new sense of creative purpose. This journey of discovery is what originally pulled me deep into the world of electronic music and continues to be part of the fascination I find when working in the studio or performing on stage. As a teenager I felt like I was searching for the right outlet to transit my creativity and in synthesis I found a path.
These memories and concepts are at the heart of our Bullfrog synthesiser. Whether someone’s experience with Bullfrog points them down a career in electronic music or not, our goal is to both nurture a passion for electronically produced sounds and promote a fun easy learning path into basic sound synthesis.
We believe that the hands-on approach and problem solving that is innate to synthesis on a semi-modular synth like the Bullfrog, contains life lessons that go beyond what we can hear. The Bullfrog encapsulates the foundations of synthesis and is built with an immediate, intuitive design and a unique expandable architecture that grows and expands together with our user's imagination.
This instrument feels at home anywhere - as an educational tool in music and physics classes, as an addition to your basement studio or even as a tool for performance on a stage.
Learn. Produce. Perform."
