Peggy Gou shares what influenced her collaboration with Lenny Kravitz during interview with Zane LoweDJ, producer and artist Peggy Gou has explained how music from the 1990s influenced her new collaboration with Lenny Kravitz on track I Believe In Love Again.
The new single landed on 8 November, and takes inspiration from R&B tracks of the ‘90s.READ MORE: The Chemical Brothers announce ‘In Conversation’ panel in London next month
In a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Gou spoke in-depth about the collaboration, where she revealed why she chose to take inspiration from this specific era of music.
“I love that you continue to draw inspiration from these timeless sounds that have given us these emotive clubbing experiences, but you make them modern,” says Lowe. “I mean you make them you. It’s like you claim them and make them your own. Where did the inspiration for I Believe In Love Again come from, Peggy?”
Gou responds, “This is my second single on the album. In the whole album, I have 11 tracks. That music, the inspiration came from ‘90s music, some rave, house music, but this song is more like R&B ‘90s because I also listen to a lot of songs from that period. I guess from my idea ‘90s music is timeless for me. I also love hip hop and every song from that period.”Lowe then discusses her use of “upper register percussive instruments” in the song, which he says no one really uses anymore, but “they were everywhere in the ‘90s.”
“If you think about it, ‘90s music was quite simple,” she replies. “Although it is quite repetitive, I feel like it’s very catchy and you don’t get bored of listening to it.”
“It’s very true. It’s almost like the drums were by design a blank canvas to write these songs over and it was like there’s a naivety to the way technology was working back then that people have mastered now,” responds Lowe. “I love that you’ve captured that sense of optimism, sampling with optimism.”
“Thank you,” says Gou. “I also wonder if it wasn’t that sound, would Lenny have accepted my collaboration?” She later adds, “Also, I listen to Lenny’s songs a lot and my favourite album from him is 5. I’m sure a lot of people agree. His songs are to me very timeless and it was such an honour to get a chance to work with him.”

Watch James Hype show you how to make a remix in just half an hourDo you want to make a remix of one of your favourite tracks but have no clue where to start? Well, you’re in luck. DJ and producer James Hype has shared a video showing how he makes a remix from start to finish, which is just 38 minutes long.
In a lot of cases, tutorials on this topic form part of lengthy (and in some cases, expensive) courses, but Hype has uploaded his walkthrough straight to his YouTube channel to watch for free.READ MORE: “I know artists with more than 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify who are not getting anywhere because no one cares”: Afrojack says “hype” is key to success
Hype – known for tracks such as Lose Control and You Give Me A Feeling with Vintage Culture – remixed the track Baby by Quality Control, Lil Baby and Da Baby originally during a livestream.
Taking to Ableton Live, he explains that the reason he decided on remixing this particular song is due to its use in Fred Again…’s popular track, Baby Again.
“I decided I was gonna do a remix, and I thought ‘fuck it, let me do it on a livestream,’ because… makes sense,” he says, before firstly using vocals only, cutting them up, and adjusting the tempo to kick things off.
He then goes on to figure out the key of the vocals, before experimenting with presets and beats. Watch the full video below:Towards the end of the video, Hype responds to a comment received during the stream which states they didn’t think his mastering chain would be as simple as it is: “Honestly man, you don’t really need very much to master something. I mean, I don’t know what a professional mastering engineer does but a lot of my stuff I’ve mastered myself. Like Lose Control, no one else touched that I did the whole thing.”
James Hype offers a further in-depth production course which focuses on songwriting, how to create “huge drops”, and how he uses sample libraries, plus more. Head to Digital DJ Tips to find out more.

The Chemical Brothers announce ‘In Conversation’ panel in London next monthThe Chemical Brothers will be hosting a panel discussion titled ‘In Conversation’ at EartH Theatre in Dalston, London, next month to mark the release of their new biography.
READ MORE: Grimes performs at event calling for looser AI rules but “disagrees with the sentiment of the party”
Organised in collaboration with Rough Trade, the event will delve into the electronic duo’s three-decade-long career, spotlighting their latest book Paused in Cosmic Reflection. Both Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons will also be sharing some “rare insight” into The Chemical Brothers’ exciting world and journey.
The panel is chaired by author and journalist Miranda Sawyer, who will be engaging in a conversation with the book’s co-author Robin Turner, along with Adam Smith, The Chemical Brothers’ longstanding collaborator and artistic director, as well as Justin Robertson, a DJ and contributor to the book.
Tickets to the event, which begin at £35, come with a signed copy of Paused in Cosmic Reflection. There’ll also be a limited entry afterparty in EartH Kitchen with a DJ Set from Justin Robertson.
Announced last June, the biography tells the “definitive story” of The Chemical Brothers, and features hundreds of hours of interviews and unseen photographs from their 30-year career. In other news, the band have recently lamented the rising costs of touring, bleakly admitting that taking their stage show to the US is “not viable”.
“The costs have gone up so much,” Simons told Billboard. “It’s just not really viable at the moment… I’m apologetic to the people who do want to see us that it is increasingly difficult for us to get to America, because we have had the times of our lives playing there.”
In the meantime, check out our review of the duo’s recent London show here.
