  • Independent labels and distributors: take our survey!Measuring the actual contribution of the independent sector to the global recorded music market is an important but difficult task. The traditional way of thinking about independent market share is to take the total market and remove the majors’ revenues from that. But this ‘distribution’ basis of market share under-represents independents because the majors also distribute independent labels and artists. The truest measure of the independents’ contribution is on a copyright ownership basis. This is a task MIDiA has conducted for many years now and a crucial input into this is our global independent label and distributor survey.

This survey is now live and we encourage independent labels and distributors of all sizes and geographies to complete it. The more completes submitted, the more accurate the final dataset will be.

We use this survey to take the pulse of what the independent sector is thinking, what challenges and opportunities it is facing, and as a measure of its commercial performance. Thus, confidentiality is absolutely crucial. All responses to this survey are treated as strictly confidential, and no company-level data, nor company-level market share is shared with any party or presented anywhere. This commitment has earnt the trust of independent labels and distributors to collect their data and build market-level datasets that they can benefit from.

All survey respondents will receive a summary of the themes component of the survey (e.g., market sentiment, market opportunities, marketing challenges, etc.) and a complete summary of the global market shares dataset. In short, MIDiA Research wants to ensure that all participants benefit from this market intel and can benchmark themselves against the market.

    Take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TYVBLJL

Please feel free to share this link with anyone you think would be interested in taking the survey.

  • Metallica and All Within My Hands Foundation Raises $3,000,000Metallica and its All Within My Hands foundation ended 2022 on a high note, as its third Helping Hands Concert & Auction raised approximately $3,000,000—100% of which will go directly to All Within My Hands’ efforts supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, disaster relief and other critical local services.

Taking place December 16, 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the Helping Hands benefit event was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and streamed live on Paramount+. Leaders from six non-profit organizations took the stage between sets from Greta Van Fleet, a guest appearance from St. Vincent, and the hosts of the evening, Metallica, who were introduced by none other than Robert Downey Jr.

“The funds raised from the Helping Hands Concert & Auction will have a lasting impact on All Within My Hands’ ability to grow our Metallica Scholars Initiative, combat hunger, and aid in response to natural disasters,” said Peter Delgrosso, Executive Director, All Within My Hands. “The Los Angeles event was the largest fundraiser in our history, and we profoundly appreciate the generosity of everyone involved. We could not have achieved these results otherwise."

As part of the Helping Hands Concert & Auction, All Within My Hands honored several mission-aligned organizations and provided grants to each to donate additional resources, including: Baby2Baby, First Star, Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, mikeroweWorks Foundation, and The Skatepark Project.

Additionally, the first donations generated by 2021’s The Metallica Blacklist compilation have been made—totaling over $1,000,000.

  • Esther Rose Signs to New West RecordsEsther Rose has signed to New West Records and will release Safe to Run April 21, 2023. The 11-track set was produced by Ross Farbe in New Orleans, LA and Placitas, NM and is the follow up to 2021’s acclaimed How Many Times. Alongside longtime collaborators Farbe and Lyle Werner, Safe to Run also features the acclaimed New Orleans based band Silver Synthetic on many songs, Cameron Snyder of The Deslondes, as well as Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the Riff Raff on the title track, a gorgeous duet that directly merges the personal with the global, superimposing feelings of spiritual displacement onto the larger, looming dread of climate grief.

Safe to Run is the quiet culmination of years spent fully immersed in a developing artistry, and presents Rose’s always vividly detailed emotional scenes with new levels of clarity and control. Her songwriting transfigures the chaos and uncertainty of a life in progress, but here she introduces a newfound pop element that attaches unshakably catchy hooks to even the darkest stretches of the journey. The album’s production takes a giant step forward. Across all of the tracks, the open-air, live-in-the-room sound she tended towards in the past was exchanged for an exploration of multitracking and overdubs.

Esther Rose’s Safe to Run will be available across digital platforms, compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A limited Pink vinyl edition will be available at Independent Retailers while a limited to 300 Pink vinyl edition autographed by Esther Rose is available for pre-order NOW via NEW WEST RECORDS.
