All about the world of music from the inside

  • Thirteen New Wave Album ClassicsAuthor Daniel de Visé offers a list of new wave classics, favoring recordings that had real impact, yielded at least one semi-legendary song, feature strong songwriting throughout, emanate a new-wavy vibe, and represent the artist's best work.

  • Trials of Cato @ Hotel Cafe in HollywoodMaterial: The Trials of Cato is a trio belting out, what sounds like, traditional folk music but with a modern twist. Every track is a journey into your mind as the tunes take you to lands far and near in traditional Welsh fashion. Banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar are the main fare this evening, where Williams picks up bass and bass drum duties with his guitar and creates a splendid backdrop on which the tunes sit. That left Jones and Bolton to wander around, giving you superb melodies of banjo, mandolin and vocals.

Musicianship: Extremely good musicianship all around. Bolton and Jones really play well off each other and together, and they use Williams as a springboard to launch their beautiful melodies and vocals. Williams is a solid musician and keeps the beats steady and stable as the songs progress ever so smoothly. Each is well written and you can tell that great care goes into each song to bring out the most out of the lyrics.

Performance: Great. The music spoke for itself as the instruments brought everything to life with each and every stroke of the strings and beat of the drum. All three––Jones, Bolton and Williams––are great storytellers, each telling tales of their homeland, how the songs came to be and the direction the band is headed.

Summary: This is a band that hit with their debut album, Hide and Hair, and won Best Folk Album of 2019 at the BBC Radio Folk Awards. Now they’re at it again with another exceptional album, Gog Magog, which likely will not disappoint, either. Currently on a tour that includes various U.S. dates, including SXSW (South By South West) and a quick stop at The Hotel Café, the Trials Of Cato are bringing you some of the best in contemporary folk and Welsh tunes the music community has heard in a while. If you like bluegrass-y, Welsh, Irish-y folk music, look no further, The Trials of Cato have arrived. – Pierce Brochetti

    May 3rd 8-9pm EST – May 4th at 1-2am London OR

    May 3rd & 4th 2-3am EST – 7-8am London

Every donation counts toward the matching fund awards they are vying for, and will assure they continue to unearth, digitize and present new works to the public.

The Society was created in 2002 as a response to composers whose access to the public was denied by the Third Reich. Hugo Kauder was one of these composers, forced to leave his beloved Vienna to continue his career. He fled to New York in order to resume teaching and writing, completing over 300 compositions. Many of these remain unpublished. The society spends its time finding ways to get his music made available to the public. In November 2022 a concert was presented at:

  • Fender Promotes Perry to Master BuilderFender Custom Shop is pleased to announce Levi Perry will be joining the Master Builders team.

Levi Perry began his journey with Fender in 2012, straight out of high school. He joined as a part of the US production final assembly department, showcasing his skills as a luthier and technician. His success in this department earned him a promotion to the Custom Shop within three years, where he served as a Relic artisan and tune tester, and, in 2018, he was promoted to assistant Master Builder. During this apprenticeship, he worked on many prestigious builds, including the Game of Thrones series, the Limited-Edition Phil Lynott Precision Bass, the Limited-Edition George Harrison Rocky Strat and the Limited Edition El Mocambo Heavy Relic Stratocaster and Telecaster models.

When asked how he feels about joining the esteemed rank of Master Builder, Levi Perry said, “For me, what’s important is always to be learning and growing and to remain a student of the craft. Fender has such a deep and rich history to glean from, and when you allow that history to teach and guide you while continuing to be creative and push the boundaries, you’ll be amazed at what you can create.”

Since 1987, the Fender Custom Shop and its esteemed builders have astounded players and collectors worldwide with creativity, ingenuity and artistry. From its humble Southern California beginnings, the Fender Custom Shop has grown to become the world’s preeminent maker of highly collectable, custom instruments operating in Corona, Calif. Known as the “Dream Factory,” the Fender Custom Shop is also home to an honoured group known as the Master Builders – some of the most skilled luthiers in the world – who craft Fender’s legendary instruments and push the boundaries of possibility.
