Artist Jessica Downs Gifts Purple Rain/Purple Haze to Guitar Center Music FoundationA guitar is not only a beautiful instrument both physically and aurally, but also a canvas for art. Local artists are creating masterpieces on the body of the guitar to raise funds for Guitar Center Music Foundation. The first entitled, “Purple Rain/Purple Haze” was created by artist, Jessica Downs, to pay tribute to Prince and Jimi Hendrix. The guitar is on display at the Hollywood Guitar Center store located at 7425 Sunset Blvd.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF) is a nonprofit organization that advances the healing, transformative power of music by granting instruments to music education and music therapy programs in need across the country.

Sieski’s electro-pop/synth-pop vibe is instantly attractive, from the moment we hear the pulsing beat and insistent melody on “Gumdrops.” Think classic female-fronted acts such as Goldfrapp, but also more contemporary projects like Magdalena Bay and Sofi Tukker. “Lady Deity” is better still—a sultry, brooding statement of intent. This strong woman knows what she wants and what she likes.

Her voice is evocative and emotional, while maintaining a level of chill like a modern Beth Orton or Beth Gibbons. All the while, the electronic backdrop is exemplary. Never intrusive, the music frames the vocals. “Happy to be Here” is perhaps the most expansive song of the three—a hypnotic journey. Now he’s front and center, serving up, not only soul-stirring axe work, but scintillating and resonant vocals as well. His takes on traditional tunes like “Back Door Man” and his own “Tiresome Blues” are spot on.
